Rules and Regs

General web

Regulex [github/jexcheng] is a JavaScript regular expression parser/visualizer.
Here’s a guide to transitioning from Ruby to JavaScript, focused on prototypes [karimbutt.github].
Storytime [github/flyoverworks] is a great-looking Rails 4 CMS and blogging engine.
Here are 10 Python idioms that will improve your life [prooffreaderplus]. If your life involves Python, that is, otherwise it may not really affect it. (Thanks Tom!)
This is an interesting look at StumbleUpon’s infrastructure, heavily reliant on open source software [odbms] (PDF).

Design

SVG Morpheus [github/alexk111] is a JavaScript library enabling mighty morphing SVG icons.
Another day, another set of Material Design-based resources. MaterialUp [materialup] collects all those Material-inspired sites and projects and serves them all up online or in your inbox.
Pocket takes a look at its data to try to answer how screen size affects how people access the content they’re interested in [getpocket]. Turns out the bigger your iPhone, the more time you’ll spend reading on it, and the less you’ll end up using your iPad. Useful insights for designers or product developers.

Live and Learn

SitePoint

Let’s start with the most important thing: If you’ve been holding off on trying our learning platform Learnable, hold off no more. For this weekend all our courses and books are free for everyone, so check out what we’re all about and then sign up if you enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving weekend, everyone!
Meanwhile, we had a couple of articles come out over Thanksgiving. Craig Buckler took a look at what’s in the latest version of Chrome that you probably already have, and finds a few iffy additions.
Then we had a video on jQuery and the CSS class selector.

Deal With It

News/business

It’s Black Friday! Deals abound! Here are some general tech deals [theverge], some Mac/iOS app deals [macrumors], and some design deals [news.layervault]. There are deals everywhere, far more than we can cover reasonably here, so just have a look around the whole internet, blow all your money and deal with the consequences later on.
Once the deals have died down, and you want to do some regular shopping, check out Canopy [canopy], which is an app offering the best of Amazon.

Off-topic

With awesome design and a social twist, the August Smart Lock [theverge] is the kind of smart home device we can get behind.
This is a really, really big photo [arcticlightphoto]. Like, 52 giga pixels, which seems like a lot.
Finally, Vice takes a look at mind-controlled prosthetics [motherboard.vice], now ready for prime time. (Thanks to Tom for all those links!)

That's it for us today, and for the week! It's been a quiet few days on the interwebs today, everyone in the US must be snoozing after all that turkey. We'll be back on Monday, see you then!
