Homeland Security Shutdown 
Homeland Security is in limbo and on the verge of losing its funding. It’s a high-stakes, partisan chess game and this afternoon a rift in the Republican party unexpectedly prevented the House from passing a three-week funding extension. It puts emergency response funds in jeopardy and frustration is growing on Capitol Hill. Rep. Peter King said, “I’ve had it with the self-righteous, delusional wing of the party.”

Seven Killed in Rampage 
Reasons are still unknown as to why a gunman went on a killing spree in a tiny Missouri community, leaving seven people dead in four nearby homes. After the first couple was shot, their 15-year-old daughter ran out a backdoor in her nightgown for help. But the alleged shooter kept going, before later killing himself. His 74-year-old mother, who’d been ill, was also found dead in her home but authorities believe she died of natural causes.

For Trekkies, he was the voice of reason. Leonard Nimoy died today after a heart illness. The 83-year-old iconic “Star Trek” star with pointy ears said it was Spock’s humanity that drew him to the role. Fans are celebrating him across social media and his on-screen captain, William Shatner, said: “We will all miss his humor, his talent and his capacity to love.”
