Nation’s top nutrition panel: the American diet is killing us
America, please eat more fruits and vegetables.A new report by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which convenes every five years, says that the rest of the American diet is having devastating effects: about two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. And maybe worse, about half of American adults - about 117 million people - have preventable chronic diseases related to poor diet and physical inactivity, the group said.  Read full article »

Sun damage keeps happening even after you go inside, new study says
Some of the damage caused by sunlight -- the DNA damage that can lead to sun burns and even skin cancer -- may occur after sun exposure ends, according to a new study published Thursday in Science. Germany’s army is so under-equipped that it used broomsticks instead of machine guns
The German army has faced a shortage of equipment for years, but the situation has recently become so precarious that some soldiers took matters into their own hands.On Tuesday, German broadcaster ARD revealed that German soldiers tried to hide the lack of arms by replacing heavy machine guns with broomsticks during a NATO exercise last year. After painting the wooden sticks black, the German soldiers swiftly attached them to the top of armored vehicles, according to a confidential army report which was leaked to ARD.  Read full article »

A rare zero stars for ‘The DUFF,’ thanks to grating heroine, draggy tone
In the era of Mo’ne Davis and the groundbreaking “Like a Girl” campaign, “The DUFF” feels like crumbs from a dated, hopelessly retrograde table.Based on Kody Keplinger’s young adult novel, this high school rom-com is tricked out in rhetoric of independence and self-discovery that give it a pseudo-feminist sheen. But, between its grating heroine, strident speechifying, derivative plot and draggy tone and tempo, it’s like the redheaded stepchild of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday.”   Read full article »
