After nearly a decade of planning, setbacks and technological breakthroughs, California is set to begin the first major rollout of an earthquake early-warning system next year, officials say, after Congress agreed to allocate crucial funding.

Kobe Bryant passes Michael Jordan on the NBA's all-time scoring list

Lakers star Kobe Bryant passed former Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan and moved into third on the NBA's all-time career scoring list during Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Bryant scored his 32,294th point on the second of two free throws with 5:24 left in the second quarter.
Bryant only trails former Lakers standouts Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928) on the all-time list. Jordan (32,292) is now fourth all-time.
The All-Star guard is in his 19th season with the Lakers, averaging 25.4 points a game this season. For the latest information go to www.latimes.com.

Box Office: 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' is No. 1 with $24.5 million debut

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" dominated the box office this weekend, riding past "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1" and meeting expectations with an estimated $24.5-million debut. Lionsgate's "Mockingjay" fell to second while adding $13.2 million to its domestic haul, and Fox's "Penguins of Madagascar" took third place over the weekend, adding $7.3 million to its haul of about $60 million to date.
