Space station back to normal, mostly, after apparent computer glitch

ALL CLEAR AFTER A LITTLE SCARE FOR THOSE ABOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION Um, yikes. So it wasn't Apollo 13 by any means, but it was a scary morning for six aboard the International Space Station today, who were forced to seal themselves in the Russian segment of the orbiting outpost — twice — after an alarm went off, suggesting a possible ammonia leak into the station's American segment. NASA determined, however, that wasn't the case, and it seemed likely it was a false alarm. We hope the astronauts and cosmonauts didn't mind the closer quarters while the alarm was probed; the crew were allowed back in this afternoon. NASA said that in case of emergency, the temporary home does have enough provisions to sustain all six for nearly a week. Have we mentioned we love it when astronauts tweet from space? Hey, @AstroSamantha and @AstroTerry, do you read #theshortlist up there?

THIS BLOOD TEST PROMISES TO HELP YOU PUT OFF GETTING OLDER This could be the best blood test you ever take. Why? Because it can keep you from getting old. At least, that's the promise from Boston-based InsideTracker, which scores your sample based on five biomarkers ranging from glucose to vitamin D. The algorithm-sourced results tell you whether your body is older or younger than your chronological age and suggests a range of foods that over time will help improve your score. The service, out today, costs $99 per analyzed blood sample, which is recommended two or three times a year to better chart progress. We're in.

'SHE WAS MY WORLD. WE LOVED HER'  Pure horror. Last week, a father was accused of throwing his 5-year-old daughter from a bridge into Tampa Bay. Police said they believe Phoebe Jonchuck was alive when she was hurled 60 feet off the bridge. She drowned in the water below. At her funeral today, mourners scrapped the black. Instead, they wore the colors of the rainbow with zebra-striped purple ribbons pinned to their chests in her memory. "She was my world. We loved her," her grandmother Michele Jonchuck said after the service. "There's not enough words in the world to describe how much this child brought so much happiness to this family."

MARCUS MARIOTA IS TURNING PRO He may have missed out on the national championship on Monday, but NFL riches await. Oregon quarterback and Heisman trophy winner Marcus Mariota is entering the NFL draft. The 6-4 junior from Honolulu threw for 5,224 yards and 58 touchdowns this season and led Oregon to the national title game, where the Ducks lost to Ohio State. Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston, who faced off in the Rose Bowl, are the nation's two top QB prospects. Yesterday, For The Win's Dan Shanoff said Ohio State QB Cardale Jonesshould also turn pro. Immediately.

PRISON BUS SLAMS INTO MOVING TRAIN A tragedy in Texas today. A bus carrying prisoners between Abilene and El Paso skidded off an icy highway embankment and tumbled onto a passing train below. Eight prisoners and two correctional officers were killed. Five people were injured — one staff member and four prisoners, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which operated the bus. "It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers," said Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the TDCJ.

Jailed lawmaker’s return brings Virginia Capitol more unwanted attention
RICHMOND, Va. — Joseph D. Why Chipotle’s pork problem is a bad sign for its future
Chipotle said yesterday that it has stopped serving pork at a third of its restaurants, or some 600 establishments countrywide, citing a standards violation by one of its suppliers. It marks the first time the burrito slinger has been forced to pull a topping from its menu. But if Chipotle continues to expand as it has in recent years, it's hard to imagine this is the last time the restaurant chain will face a problem like this.  Read full article »

The things Amazon chooses to charge you more for (and why)
Amazon.com is not always the cheapest place to buy everything. That may come as a shock to you, especially since Amazon has billed itself as a place for good deals, according to a new report from retail analytics firm Boomerang Commerce.  The report compares the pricing strategies of Amazon and Wal-Mart, which also aggressively markets itself as a low-price leader, in several product categories.  Read full article »
A day after deadly Metro incident, few details on emergency response
For scores of choking passengers caught in a smoke-filled Metro train Monday and waiting to be rescued from a tunnel, the ordeal seemed interminable. By some accounts, 40 minutes or more went by before firefighters showed up and forced open the doors. A lot of riders said they feared they would die. And one woman did.  Read full article »
A 12-year-old football fan asked every NFL team why he should root for them — and he got responses
Here is a thing that Cade Pope, a 12-year-old from Oklahoma, said Tuesday about the power of hand-written letters: “It shows more expression and feelings, rather than typing it on a computer. And it explains a lot more if you actually write it, because you can actually tell what they are trying to say.”  Read full article »
Cardinal Burke is right. Women are terrifying.
Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke is right.Women are scary. Women are terrifying. They come into churches and bring cooties with them, and there is no ritual for casting out cooties. Demons, yes. Cooties, no. They come into boardrooms and take seats. They serve the altar — and they are good at it.  Read full article »
