Making a Second Sun: Scientists Make Artificial Skylight That You Won’t Believe (video)

Take a look at the video below, and you'll understand why everyone is so excited about this new bit of tech. Developed by Italian scientists, this stunning LED skylight uses a thin coating of nanoparticles to recreate the effect that makes the sky blue, which is known as Rayleigh scattering.
Rayleigh scattering essentially addresses how light is scattered. As the various wavelengths of light enter our atmosphere, they encounter particles and are scattered about the sky. Shorter wavelengths are scattered much more than longer ones, so colors like red travel in fairly straight lines from the sun with only a little bit of scattering, while colors like blue are scattered all over the place, giving the sky its blue color (part of it is also how sensitive our eyes are to certain colors, which is why the sky looks blue and not violet, as violet is a shorter wavelength).
Ultimately, this device doesn't just make light that looks like the real deal. It feels real. The LED skylight produces the texture and feel of sunlight, which tricks the brain into thinking that it is a bright and sunny day when, in reality, the person in question may be a mile underground (or even under the ocean). And think of how this could completely revolutionize our subway systems.
However, to many people, this may seem like an unnecessary advancement, one that will only have an aesthetic appeal. Yet, it could bring some much needed relief to many people who have long hospital stays, suffer from seasonal depression, or face any number of other related issues.
Either way, I wouldn't plan on encountering the devices just yet, as they cost some $61,000 to buy and then another $7,000 for installation. Still, the technology of tomorrow is looking pretty interesting.
