Two years in the making, Node.js upgrade arrives

In development for nearly two years, the 0.12 release of Node.js is about to become available. Whether the release can mend the now-fractured community that has been built around the popular server-side JavaScript platform remains to be seen. Officials at Node.js steward Joyent and at Strongloop, which is involved in Node.js development, provided InfoWorld details about the upcoming release, for which the download should become available today.

U.S. lawmakers try again to curb abusive patent lawsuits

A group of U.S. lawmakers has reintroduced a bill aimed at limiting the ability of so-called patent trolls to file abusive patent infringement lawsuits.The Innovation Act, introduced in the House of Representatives Thursday, is the same bill that passed the chamber by a 325-91 vote in December 2013. The Senate then failed to act on the legislation, killing the bill during the last session of Congress.

IBM brings more Watson smarts to developers

IBM is expanding its roster of Watson online services that can be deployed by developers to enhance their apps with analysis and data processing capabilities. Five new services announced Thursday are all designed to be embedded within mobile or desktop apps through APIs (application programming interfaces), and provide advanced functionality that otherwise would have been be too time-consuming and laborious for developers to create from scratch.
