‘The Interview’ Opens & North Korea Responds

The Big Opening 
Seth Rogen surprised fans at the opening of his comedy “The Interview” and thanked them for helping to get the controversial flick to the screen. Moviegoers lined up today from New York to LA for its punchlines. As they expressed a sense of patriotic duty in buying tickets for the movie, North Korea issued its first response to its release.

Holiday Hopes 
NASA astronauts sent back wishes for a happy new year from space and joined the tidings of goodwill being delivered around the world. The Queen of England spoke of the lasting power of peace, and back in the States there were toys for homeless boys and girls and volunteers brought meals to the elderly at home. Among the tiniest to celebrate — newborn babies in Pittsburgh who were bundled with care.

Trying to Heal 
After another night of protests for the fatal police shooting in Berkeley, Missouri, a local pastor offered a sermon for troubled times. He spoke of the need for “someone to hear their voice” and raised concerns about the tensions in St. Louis and New York. But as some look to heal, a man was arrested today in New York for allegedly threatening to kill officers.

Bush Remains Hospitalized 
President George H.W. Bush spent the holiday in the hospital as a precaution, his family spokesperson said. The 90-year-old was admitted Tuesday while suffering from what was described as shortness of breath. NBC’s Jacob Rascon is at Houston Methodist Hospital with the latest.
