The three former heads of the Department of Homeland Security are warning Congress not to hold up funding for the sprawling department as lawmakers continue fighting over immigration reform.The three former secretaries of homeland security -- two Republicans and one Democrat -- say in a letter obtained by The Washington Post that a prolonged fight could risk national security at a time of sustained threats from terrorist groups. Obama’s free college plan is no panacea; just ask California
President Obama’s proposal to make community colleges free is a valiant effort to address the rising demand for skilled workers throughout the nation and to improve college access for low-income students. As states consider his proposal, they would be wise to look to California. Our research in the state suggests that low tuition can put higher education within reach for many low-income students, but it is no panacea. Even with high participation levels and nearly free community college, many California students do not complete degrees.  Read full article »

The manufacturer of the drone that crashed on the White House lawn earlier this week says it is working to prevent future such incidents by erecting a no-fly zone in the devices' flight software. Happy Data Privacy Day. Legally speaking, you’re mostly on your own.
Today is Data Privacy Day -- an actually recognized pseudo-holiday that the U.S. Congress first made official in 2009, two years after the European Council did the same.It's nice to have a day on which we all personally recognize the importance of data privacy. Because, legally speaking, we're more or less on our own.
