What's in your fridge?

Afternoon all,

Tomatoes, an aubergine, eggs and some milk. That’s what Santosh is about to put in his fridge. It's a big deal because it's his first fridge. It's a bigger deal because it's the only fridge in his small Indian village. So bringing it to the house got a bit of attention. That and the fridge welcoming ceremony. His wife applied a dab of vermillion to the fridge, to keep away evil spirits, and then blew on a conch shell to seek divine blessings. Then they put the groceries in the fridge. That scene is being replayed, in various forms, in other small villages as more and more people get fridges. There’s still a quarter of households around the world that don’t have one.

How’s this for an embarrassing moment averted. L/Sgt Perkins almost dropped Winston Churchill’s coffin in front of more than a million people who were lining the streets for his funeral. There he is, in the middle.

He was carrying the coffin with seven other soldiers when ahead of them Lord Atlee stumbled on the stairs. It slipped off the shoulders of two of the coffin bearers. The two men at the back managed to push it back and disaster was averted. But the reason they were caught off guard is curious. The coffin was heavier than they expected – they were told by the undertakers that it was lined with lead.

Menachem Bodner is looking for his twin. He hasn’t seen him for 70 years. That’s when they were released from Auschwitz. He’s one of over 700 pairs of twins who were experimented on in the camp. Menachem and his brother had been in the camp since he was three and the number tattooed on his arm became his identity. He had no idea who he was when they were released. With the help of a genealogist he has recently discovered that his real name is Elias Gottesman and that he and his brother, named Jeno, were born in a small town in Hungary. He’s now on a mission to find Jeno.
