We can think of few other topics that are more mis-understood, more wrong information disseminated about, more mythology exists, and more over-simplified claims made about than the effects of genetics on behavior.

If you take just a few minutes to think about the subject, it's easy to come up with numerous examples of mis-information and mis-statements.  Here are just a few that immediately popped in our heads:

  • "Aggression is 60% genetic and 40% due to learning and experience." (fill in the percentages of your choice)
  • "[Fill in the breed of your choice] aren't any more aggressive than any other dog.  It's all in how you raise and train them."

Let's look at the other side of the coin.  What do the following statements mean to you?

  • "Response to selection is considered proof of a genetic correlate to the behaviors under study."
  • "...segregation of the trait of interest in the line/population is essential to document before you start talking about phenotypes and genotypes."

The last two sentences come from our guest Chatters, and speak the language of behavior geneticists.  The first two are examples of "genetic mythology".  Now you have the chance to hear from two applied behavior geneticists with research experience in the companion animal field.

We are excited to welcome our long-time friends, fellow CAABs and genetic experts extraordinaire  Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli and Dr. Steve Zawistowski to this month's CAAB Chat titled "Is It Really All About the Genes?"

Dr. Alice spent years studying the genetics and behavior of wolves, coy-dogs (coyote-beagle hybrids) and more recently tail chasing in bull terriers and flank-sucking in Dobermans during her tenure at Tufts University.

Dr. Steve recently retired from years as a Senior Vice President at the ASPCA in New York.  He did his graduate work under Dr. Jerry Hirsch, one of the most respected behavior geneticists and grew up training beagles for the field.

If you've been around either Alice or Steve for any length of time you know that these two will deliver a spirited, lively, humorous, entertaining, and yet amazingly informative discussion you've ever had the privilege of listening to.  GUARANTEED. You can read more about Dr. Alice and Dr. Steve under the CAABChat bios atwww.CAABChats.com
If you want to be able to counter even a portion of the slew of mis-information you come across everyday about behavior and genetics AND be able to think critically about some of the new genetics research that is relying primarily on owner reports and surveys to gather information about behavior you can not afford to miss this Chat.
