As explosions rang out, police in Sydney, Australia, today stormed a cafe where hostages were being held at gunpoint. The explosions could be heard early Tuesday local time, just after six hostages emerged from the cafe, one of them being assisted by law enforcement. More were removed on stretchers a short time later. Australian media have reported that the gunman is believed to be Sheik Man Haron Monis, an Iranian-born, self-styled Muslim cleric who has been charged in a series of violent crimes.
