Particle Fever

General web

First up, Deis [github] is an open-source Platform as a Service, built on the work of Docker and CoreOS with a bit of Heroku inspiration as well.
particles.js [github] is a light JavaScript library for creating particles.
vivus.js [github] is a JavaScript class to create a drawing animation for SVGs.
AudioKit [github] is a really polished audio platform built in Objective C.
And this is an intro to distributed hash tables [freedomlayer], which is exactly as exciting as it sounds, but also very interesting!

In Principle

Design

Here are nine basic principles of responsive web design in animated gif form [blog.froont]. Animated gif is always the best form.
Here are 7 CSS units you may not have heard of [webdesign.tutsplus].
This is a very impressive resume/portfolio site that is worth looking at [kylereadsays], which is a sentence we didn’t expect to ever write. Here’s a little guide to creating such a site, along with some more examples [sitepoint].

Deep Impact

SitePoint

SitePoint-wise, it was another busy day. Here’s a run-down of everything you need to know about Meteor 1.0.
And if you haven’t given Vagrant a go, and you use a Windows computer, here’s how to get started.

The Masque

News/business

A lot of security stuff today. Last week brought the news of a Mac/iOS malware operation dubbed “WireLurker”. It turns out Wirelurker was a “limited” form of “a Masque attack”, a much more worrying type of attack to replace legit apps with malicious versions [arstechnica]. Except maybe you shouldn’t panic, as you’ll be OK as long as you don’t disable Apple’s default security [appleinsider].
Windows users also have reason to be a bit freaked, with Microsoft recently announcing it had patched a massive server vulnerability [gizmodo]. Well worth checking whether you need to patch your machine/cower in an underground bunke.
Earlier this week Apple released a tool to help users deregister their phone numbers from iMessage, fixing a common annoyance for people moving away from iOS. Funny timing, since a US judge has just ruled that a case against the tech giant, relating to exactly this issue, will be allowed to proceed [macrumors].
Meanwhile, some ISPs are removing their customers’ encryption [eff], which seems just a little bit objectionable.

Off-topic

Taylor Swift and Spotify have been having a pretty public argument ever since the ridiculously successful singer pulled her discography from the streaming service. Spotify fired back with a blog post ostensibly proving how much the service has contributed to the music industry [news.spotify], saying Swift would’ve made $6 million from her catalog this year, if she’d kept it on their servers. She’s currently making $12 million a week. Are her and Spotify never ever getting back together? Who can say?
The Oatmeal perfectly explains the importance of Net Neutrality [theoatmeal], useful for those, like US senator Ted Cruz, who seem hell-bent on obfuscating the issue.
Finally, and definitely off-topic, Amazon has a great list of the 100 best books of the year [amazon].
