MongoDB 2.8 features detailed

The MongoDB team has been out touring cities and detailing its plans for the future of its NoSQL database. At the last stop in San Francisco, the features for version 2.8 were laid out. Chief among them is document-level locking, a feature that will enable developers to enact security on individual database documents rather than at less-granular levels.

Kelly Stirman, director of products at MongoDB, said that MongoDB 2.8 will not be a standalone product for enterprises. For purchasers of MongoDB Enterprise Advanced, a new on-premises version of the company’s hosted MongoDB Management Service [MMS], known as the MongoDB Ops Manager, is included...

Linux is the go-to choice for the cloud, report says

Linux is not only the top platform for the cloud, but users also consider it the most secure compared to other platforms, according to a report. The Linux Foundation has released the results of its annual Enterprise End User Report, revealing that 75% of enterprises use Linux as their primary cloud platform, compared to 23% who use Windows as their primary platform and another 2% who use Unix.

Cloud-based storage is amazing. Simply amazing. That’s especially true when you are talking about data from end users that are accessing your applications via the public Internet.

If you store data in your local data center, you have the best control over it. You can place it close to your application servers. You can amortize it as a long-term asset. You can see it, touch it and secure it—or at least, have full control over security.
