NYT: Testing Obama, Senate Approves Keystone Pipeline The Senate passed a bill on Thursday to force approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which President Obama is certain to veto in his first official clash with the new Republican-majority Congress. The five-year fight over the Keystone pipeline has become a proxy for far broader fights over climate change, energy and the economy, and for the conflict between Mr. Obama and congressional Republicans. When Republicans won control of the Senate late last year, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, chose the Keystone bill as the first measure Republicans would send to Mr. Obama. USA Today: Obama Wants End Of Sequester, Seeks 7% Spending Hike Heralding a new budget battle with congressional Republicans, President Obama called Thursday for an end to the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration and proposed a 7% hike in spending above those limits. "Let's make sure that we're funding the things that we know help American families succeed," Obama told a meeting of House Democrats as his staff disclosed parts of a proposed budget to be unveiled Monday. The president wants to "reverse harmful sequestration cuts," and focus instead on "middle-class economics" that includes new programs for child care, paid leave and community college, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Washington Post: Obama Addresses House Democrats, Takes Some Blame For Midterm Losses In a dinnertime address [at House Democrats' retreat in Philadelphia,] Obama seemed to relish the recent Republican focus on income inequality. "Even though their policies have not caught up with it, their rhetoric is starting to sound pretty Democratic," he said. He even took a subtle dig at his 2012 campaign rival, Mitt Romney, who said in a recent speech that he believes that poverty should be a central theme of the next presidential campaign. Obama brought it up by noting that one of his former opponents is "Suddenly, deeply concerned about poverty. That's great! Let's go!" ... The president used his brief remarks to revive the spirits of House Democrats, who saw their numbers drop to a historic 188-member low after the midterm elections. "It is our obligation to make sure that we are crystal clear about what we stand for and who we are fighting for," he told them. "We were all disappointed with the outcome with the last election, and there are a lot of reasons for it and I’m happy to take on some of the blame." Read more..
Bloomberg Politics: Jeb Bush Snags Key Romney Adviser If Bush decides to run for president, Iowa's David Kochel reportedly will be his campaign manager. From the Des Moines Register: Jeb Bush has successfully recruited a key political strategist into his inner circle: Iowa’s David Kochel, who has been a close adviser to Mitt Romney since Romney’s earliest days on the presidential campaign trail. After three months of soul-searching and election forecasting, Kochel decided this week to join Team Bush, he told The Des Moines Register today in an exclusive interview. Kochel, 50, of Des Moines, will be a senior adviser to Bush’s new political action committee, Right to Rise. If Bush pulls the trigger and runs for president of the United States, Kochel would be tapped to lead his national campaign, Bush’s advisers told the Register. Read more..
AP: As Romney Weighs 16' Bid, His Past Donors Commit To Jeb Closing in on a decision about whether to again run for president, Mitt Romney is finding that several past major fundraisers and donors in key states have defected to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. The donors, in interviews with The Associated Press, said they see in Bush what they liked about Romney in 2012, namely what they believe it takes to serve successfully as president, but also something Romney could not muster in his two previous campaigns: what it takes, both in personality as a candidate and in a supporting staff, to win the White House for the GOP. Also, the donors said, they took the former Massachusetts governor at his word when he said he would not run for president a third time. Read more..
Politico: Rand Paul ‘Secret Tape’ Dings Jeb, Hillary On Dynasty Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the 2016 field’s most prolific adopter of social media, has posted what aides wryly call a “secret tape” of a fake phone call between Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. RAND PAC, Paul’s political organization, used actors to portray the conversation, which hits both rivals on the dynasty issue. “Bush” tells her he’s thinking about running for president: “I just wanted to call and give you a heads-up in hopes we could work something out.” “Clinton” says: “We both agree on so many issues: bigger government, Common Core, and amnesty for illegal immigrants.” Read more..
Bloomberg Politics: Lindsey Graham's 2016 Exploration Takes Shape Senator Lindsey Graham offered new details on his White House deliberations on Thursday, saying he had formed a group called Security Through Strength to consider whether to jump into the wide-open 2016 race. “We’ll see if there’s a pathway forward for a guy like me,” the South Carolina Republican said on Fox. “Time will tell.” On its website, the organization says its purpose is to “fund the infrastructure and operations allowing Graham to travel the country, listen to Americans, and gauge support for a potential presidential candidacy.” Graham said Jan. 18 on NBC's Meet the Press that he had set up a “testing-the-waters” group as he weighed the campaign decision. Daily Beast: McCain Calls Protesters ‘Low-Life Scum’ John McCain slammed anti-war protesters who interrupted the Senate Armed Services Committee during testimony from Henry Kissinger, Madeline Albright, and George Shultz. “Get out of here you low-life scum,” the Vietnam War veteran told the demonstrators from Codepink, a self-described “women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement.” Prior to the interruption, Codepink tweeted: “We are at the Senate Armed Services committee meeting to arrest Henry Kissinger on his countless war crimes!” Read more..
Politico: David Duke Says He 'Might' Challenge Rep. Steve Scalise David Duke says he is considering challenging Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who’s tried in recent weeks to distance himself from the former Ku Klux Klan leader. “I might have to run against Steve Scalise because you know, I really might,” Duke said Wednesday on “The Jim Engster Show” on Baton Rouge’s TALK 107.3. “I mean, I’m definitely going to consider it because it’s so disgusting to me to see … he got elected on false pretenses.” Duke’s comments, first reported Thursday by BuzzFeed, came during an oftentimes heated interview in which he repeatedly described Scalise as a “sellout” for backing away from the white nationalist. WSJ: Warren Asks Wall Street For Answers On Dodd-Frank Rollback Elizabeth Warren and her allies are keeping up the pressure on the contentious Dodd-Frank rollback that made its way into a must-pass $1.1 trillion spending bill at the end of last year. Ms. Warren (D., Mass.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D., Maryland) sent letters to four top Wall Street banks Thursday asking for details about how the firms will alter their derivatives trading operations in the wake of the change. Mr. Cummings is the top Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government reform and Ms. Warren a member of the Senate Banking Committee. The letters are a clear indication that liberal Democrats plan to continue hammering big banks over the change – which all but eliminated a provision forcing banks to “push-out” risky swaps activities into affiliates that aren’t eligible for federal backstops. Politico: Vice President Joe Biden Urges Support For Central America Aid Package Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday urged support for a $1 billion economic aid package for three Central American countries [Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras] whose economic plight has been highlighted by the ongoing child-migrant crisis on America’s southern border. The investment — about three times more than the normal allotment — will be announced on Monday by President Barack Obama, Biden wrote in an op-ed published in the New York Times. “As we were reminded last summer when thousands of unaccompanied children showed up on our southwestern border, the security and prosperity of Central America are inextricably linked with our own,” Biden wrote. BBC: Islamic State Hostages: Jordan Seeks Proof Pilot Is Alive The Jordanian government is seeking proof a pilot captured by the Islamic State group is still alive as efforts continue to negotiate a prisoner swap. Lt Moaz al-Kasasbeh's family said sources had assured them he was alive shortly before an apparent new IS deadline for the swap passed. Jordan is ready to swap an Iraqi al-Qaeda prisoner for its pilot. However, IS is only offering to free a Japanese hostage in return, while sparing the pilot's life. Japanese hostage Kenji Goto's wife, Rinko, confirmed to the BBC that IS was offering to free Mr Goto in return for the release of Iraqi al-Qaeda member Sajida al-Rishawi. Read more..
AFP: U.S. Says 'No' To Handing Guantanamo Back To Cuba Efforts to improve ties with Cuba will not extend to handing control of Guantanamo Bay back to Havana, the White House said on Thursday. "The president does believe that the prison at Guantanamo Bay should be closed down," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. "But the naval base is not something that we wish to be closed." The base, on Cuba's southeastern tip, is currently the site of a large naval base as well as a deeply controversial prison used to detain terror suspects without trial. Cuban President Raul Castro on Wednesday said handing back control of the 45 square mile (116 square kilometer) site was a precondition for normalizing ties with the United States.http://news.yahoo.com/us-says-no-handing-guantanamo-back-cuba-201916697.html Read more..
Washington Post: 3 Americans Killed In Shooting At Kabul Military Hub Three American civilian contractors and an Afghan national were killed Thursday in a shooting incident at a military base attached to Kabul’s international airport, according to U.S. officials. A fourth American contractor was wounded in the attack. It was unclear how the contractors were attacked. Suspicion fell immediately on a possible “insider attack” perpetrated by a member of the Afghan security forces, who also have access to the military base at the airport. An unidentified Afghan air force official told the Reuters news agency that the shooter was an Afghan soldier. When asked whether the incident was an “insider attack,” a U.S. military spokesman, Col. Brian Tribus, declined to comment. He said there would be no further comments on the incident until the investigation was complete. Read more..
NYT: Hunt For Hezbollah Tunnels Goes On, Even As Border Tensions Fade It is quiet most nights in this small, hilltop community in northern Israel on the border with Lebanon, and these days quite tense. So when residents began reporting strange sounds coming from underground recently, military engineers came running. On Thursday, they drilled deep into the ground by the perimeter fence of this village, checking for tunnels that the jittery residents suspect Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, was digging under their homes. It was the second day of the army’s drilling operation, which took on greater urgency after an attack on Wednesday by Hezbollah that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded seven others when antitank missiles hit the unarmored, unmarked vehicle in which they were riding about a mile from the Lebanese border. Funerals were held on Thursday for the soldiers. Read more..
AP: Simultaneous Attacks In Egypt's Sinai Kill 26 Militants struck more than a dozen army and police targets in the restive Sinai Peninsula with simultaneous attacks involving a car bomb and mortar rounds on Thursday, killing at least 26 security officers. An Army spokesman immediately blamed former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood of orchestrating the attack, which killed 25 Army soldiers and one policeman. The wide-ranging attacks late Thursday required a previously unseen level of coordination. At least one car bomb was set off outside a military base, while mortars were simultaneously fired at the base, toppling some buildings and leaving soldiers buried under the debris, official said. NYT: French Police Question Boy, 8, After Remarks On Paris Attacks Police officials in the southern French city of Nice questioned an 8-year-old boy who is believed to have made comments in school defending the gunmen who killed 17 people in terrorist attacks in and near Paris this month, a senior regional police official confirmed on Thursday. The questioning of the boy, which occurred Wednesday, grabbed headlines across the country and spurred a debate on social media and elsewhere about whether France’s desire to combat terrorism was tipping over into hysteria. Since the attacks, France has moved to enforce tough new laws against the incitement of terrorism, fueling tensions between free speech and public order. Read more..
NBC News: Three Dead In Gas Blast At Mexico Maternity Hospital A gas truck exploded Thursday and leveled part of a maternity and children's hospital in Mexico City. Authorities said that three people, including two children, were killed and that at least 70 other people were injured, 17 of them seriously. Authorities said Thursday night that nine children were among the more seriously injured victims. About 100 people were in the hospital at the time of the explosion, which authorities said was caused by a leak in a hose from the truck, which was fueling the hospital's tanks. Three gas tanker workers who tried but failed to fix the leaking hose have been detained, police told NBC News. Read more..
Washington Post: 2015 U.S. Measles Outbreak Already At 84 Cases, More Than In A Typical Year The 2015 measles outbreak already has spread to 84 people, more than health officials typically see in an entire year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. Most of the cases are traceable to an outbreak at Disneyland and another theme park in Southern California that began in late December and now has spread to six other states, including Utah, Washington, Oregon and Colorado. In all, measles has reached 14 states, according to Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Read more..
NBC News: 3 Daily Cocktails May Boost Stroke Risk: Study People in their 50s and 60s who down more than two alcoholic beverages daily have a 34 percent higher risk of stroke compared to lighter drinkers — and are more apt to suffer a stroke five years earlier in life regardless of their genetics or their other health habits, asserts a study released Thursday. In fact, sipping beyond a two-drink maximum each day may boost a middle-aged person's stroke risk more than even traditional health dangers like high blood pressure and diabetes, say researchers who base their findings on tracking more than 11,000 Swedish twins for roughly half their lives. Bloomberg: Jobless Claims In U.S. Plunge To 15-Year Low The fewest Americans in almost 15 years filed applications for unemployment benefits during a holiday-shortened week that typically makes the data more volatile. Jobless claims plunged by 43,000 to 265,000 in the week ended Jan. 24, the lowest since April 2000, a Labor Department report showed Thursday in Washington. The median forecast of 51 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 300,000. The week included the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which makes the data more difficult to calculate, a government spokesman said as the report was released. Firings probably will remain muted and companies will keep adding to payrolls as rising consumer confidence and spending help the U.S. economy withstand waning overseas demand. Federal Reserve policy makers yesterday boosted their assessment of the economy as the job market improved and fuel costs dropped. Read more..
