Japan is famous around the world for its comics and cartoons, known as manga and anime. They are part of a huge cultural industry - but some are deeply shocking, featuring children in sexually explicit scenarios. This material would certainly be considered controversial, and possibly illegal, in the UK, Australia or Canada. But in Japanese society it's apparently no big deal. Although child protection campaigners want a ban, Japan's parliament last year decided against outlawing "virtual" sexual images of characters who appear to be under 18. Why hasn't Japan banned explicit child manga comics?

Footballer Ched Evans was jailed for rape in 2012. Now released and protesting his innocence, he wants to resurrect his career. Clubs which have considered signing him have faced furious protests. There's one overarching factor cited by virtually all of his critics - the failure to say sorry. Politicians condemn his lack of remorse. A petition insisting he should not play until he acknowledges his guilt has attracted tens of thousands of signatures. But what would it mean if he did apologise? An eminent criminologist says it’s an essential first step towards rehabilitation. It wouldn’t be enough for some of his opponents – but others believe he should be allowed to return to the game whether or not he expresses regret for his behaviour. What difference would it make if Ched Evans said sorry?

In 1959 the trumpeter Miles Davis released Kind of Blue, an album that changed jazz forever. It has been consistently voted one of the most influential albums of all time by critics and fans, charting a completely new direction for Davis, and jazz itself. Tired of the traditional "be-bop" style, Davis embraced a radically different approach, the so-called "modal" style of playing.
