New overhaul of LAFD hiring needed, report says

Hiring in the Los Angeles Fire Department needs an overhaul and a "long-term" campaign to improve diversity, according to a report released today. The Rand Corp. report calls for reforms of the hiring process after a reboot by Mayor Eric Garcetti came amid concerns of nepotism and mismanagement. Hiring was halted in March after a Los Angeles Times investigation that found recruits were overwhelmingly white and a high number were relatives of firefighters.
