USA Today: Obama: $4 Trillion Budget Replaces "Mindless Austerity" President Obama submitted his $4 trillion budget wish-list to a Republican Congress Monday, calling for a return to increased domestic and military spending to be paid for in part by higher taxes on the wealthy. The plan includes a $478 billion public works infrastructure program for roads, bridges, and transit systems, to be financed by taxes on overseas earnings. The budget calls for new tax credits and other initiatives devoted to education, child care, paid leave, and infrastructure, with tax hikes resulting from the closure of tax loopholes. ... "I want to work with Congress to replace mindless austerity with smart investments that strengthen America," Obama said in a speech at the Department of Homeland Security. "I'm not going to accept a budget that locks in sequestration going forward. It would be bad for our security, and bad for our growth." Read more..
McClatchy: Obama Budget Shuns The Word "Spending" President Barack Obama’s budget message Monday shuns the word “spending.” He refers to proposed new spending most often as “investing,” as in investing in children or teachers or national defense. He also prefers to say his budget “provides” things, such as child care. In his budget message to Congress, he uses some form of the word “invest” 18 times. He uses some form of the word “provide” 7 times. He a variation of the word “spend” just three times, and none to describe his proposals. A budget fact sheet sent out by the White House has a similar trend: 52 references to investing, 28 to providing, and just 6 to spending. Read more..
The Hill: Chris Christie Walks Back Vaccine Comments The office of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said Monday that he believed there is "no question kids should be vaccinated" for the measles virus, clarifying comments he made earlier in the day. "To be clear: The Governor believes vaccines are an important public health protection and with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated," this office said in a statement emailed by aide Kevin Roberts. "At the same time different states require different degrees of vaccination, which is why he was calling for balance in which ones government should mandate." Earlier on Monday, Christie was asked whether he believed parents should vaccinate their children and whether he believed the measles vaccine to be safe. ... Christie said that he and his wife had vaccinated their children but said parents need to have a "choice" in the matter. Read more..
NBC News: Rand Paul: Vaccines Can Lead To "Mental Disorders" Republican Sen. Rand Paul is standing by his statement that most vaccinations should be "voluntary,"telling CNBC that a parent's choice not to vaccinate a child is "an issue of freedom." In an interview with the network Monday, Paul said that vaccines are "a good thing" but that parents "should have some input" into whether or not their children must get them. And he gave credence to the idea - disputed by the majority of the scientific community - that vaccination can lead to mental disabilities. "I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines," he said. ... Earlier Monday, Paul said on Laura Ingraham's radio show that "most" vaccines should be voluntary. Read more..
Washington Post: Bush Adds Two New Advisers To 2016 Team Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) has brought on two more veteran GOP strategists for his national political operation. The addition of consultants Danny Diaz and Jon Downs is the latest move in Bush's effort to stockpile talent as he moves closer to launching a 2016 presidential campaign. Last week, Bush tapped David Kochel, an Iowa-based Republican, as an adviser to his Right to Rise political-action committee. Kochel is also expected to serve as campaign manager should Bush run. Diaz, who co-founded FP1 Strategies with Downs, confirmed their hires Monday. Sally Bradshaw, a top Bush adviser, said Diaz and Downs will focus on promoting Bush's economic pitch. Read more..
The Hill: Hillary Eyes Brooklyn For Campaign HQ Hillary Clinton is focused on housing her 2016 campaign headquarters in New York City — potentially in Brooklyn, which has emerged as a leading contender. Insiders say Clinton aides are looking at Brooklyn as a possible location, and that an office in White Plains, near the Clintons’s Chappaqua, N.Y., home, has been all but ruled out. For months, some in the Clinton universe thought that setting up the campaign in or around White Plains, a middle-class enclave with dozens of office parks, would be a good home for the former secretary of State’s second presidential campaign. But using Brooklyn for its headquarters could be a useful symbol for a campaign that hopes to win over young people and has already been attacked by Republicans as “old news.” Read more..
Politico: Florida Poll: Marco Rubio Should Run For Reelection, Not President Floridians overwhelmingly think GOP Sen. Marco Rubio should stick with his current job rather than seek the White House in 2016, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released Monday. Just 15 percent of respondents said Rubio should run for president, while 57 percent said he should seek a second term in the Senate. About a quarter of respondents were unsure. Republicans are even more adamant that Rubio should stay in the Senate: More than two-thirds, 68 percent, want Rubio to seek reelection. Only 19 percent want him to run for president. Voters are more on board with former Gov. Jeb Bush running for the White House: 42 percent think he should, while 43 percent think he shouldn’t. Among Republicans, 59 percent think he should run for president, and 31 percent say he should not. Read more..
NYT: In Christie's Career, A Fondness For Luxe Benefits When Others Pay The Bills The governor, a Republican now preparing a run for president, shot to national prominence as a cheese-steak-on-the-boardwalk Everyman who bluntly preached transparency and austerity as the antidote to bloated state budgets. But throughout his career in public service, Mr. Christie has indulged a taste that runs more toward Champagne at the Four Seasons. He has also quietly let others pay the bills. That tendency — the governor himself says he wants to “squeeze all the juice out of the orange” — has put him in ethically questionable situations, taking benefits from those who stand to benefit from him. NYT: Republican Takeover Of Senate Pushes Women Out Of Powerful Committee Posts Last year, when Democrats controlled the Senate, women led a record nine committees, including male bastions like the Appropriations Committee, which dispenses billions in federal dollars, and Intelligence, which oversees the government’s secret national security apparatus. Now there are only two female committee chairs: Ms. Murkowski and Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine. In the House, while women hold five of the 10 elected leadership spots, only one woman — Representative Candice Miller of Michigan – leads a committee. The reason is largely because Congress is a culture where power is tied tightly with seniority, and committee chairmanships do not go to junior members. More than two-thirds of female lawmakers are Democrats, and Democratic women, who overall were elected earlier and in larger numbers than their Republican counterparts, have more longevity. When Democrats lost control, women lost top jobs. Read more..
