Afternoon all,
Take the first day of your last period, add a year, subtract three months, and add seven days. That’s when you’re going to have your baby. (Only applies to pregnant women). That’s how it was estimated in the 18th Century anyway. Curiously, nowadays the French measure due dates differently to the UK and US. While the US and UK predict the baby will be born 40 weeks after the first day of the mother’s last period, in France it is 41 weeks. One obstetrician told us French doctors just manage expectations better. While doctors in the UK or US wait up to two weeks after an estimated delivery date before inducing birth, French doctors give women an extra week to start with, then induce more quickly.
How accurate are 'due dates'?Recent stories of child sexual abuse have focused on celebrities and grooming gangs. But campaigners think that more than 80% of abuse takes place within the home and estimate that one in three children never tell anyone about it. So children are now being given explicit warnings in school about dangers posed by people they know. Fergal Keane and Dominic Hurst went to one of these lessons and found the content remarkably frank.
