PACIFIC OCEAN (March 2, 2015) Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Sam Simeon searches the night sky for possible air contacts while standing lookout watch aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). Essex is underway conducting an amphibious squadron and Marine expeditionary unit integration training exercise with Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 3 and the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in preparation for an upcoming deployment. ARABIAN GULF (March 1, 2015) An MV-22B Osprey assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 (Reinforced) lands on the flight deck of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21) as another prepares to take off during flight operations. New York is part of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and, with the embarked 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. SUNDA STRAIT (March 1, 2015) Sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson (DDG 102) salute as the Australian Armidale-class patrol boat HMAS Larrakia (ACPB 84), top, prepares to lay a wreath during a ceremony commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Sunda Strait. Representatives from Australia, the U.S. and Indonesia visited the graves of HMAS Perth (D 29) and USS Houston (CA 30) which were sunk fighting Japanese naval forces March 1, 1942.
