Pharmacist Check-In: Are You Feeling Better?
Facts and Tips about Heartburn and GERD Drugs
By Kristen Dore, PharmD
A PPI may take a few days to start working and for you to feel better. Depending on your digestive condition, it may take up to four weeks to feel total relief of your symptoms.

Once a person starts to feel better on a medication, they may think they no longer need this medication. However, that is not always the case. With PPIs it is important to take your medication as directed to ensure proper healing — even if you are feeling better. Although relief of symptoms is important and can be a sign that your digestive track is healing, absence of symptoms does not mean that you are completely healed. Do not just stop taking your PPI if you feel better, unless your health care provider tells you to do so.
