Jupiter at Opposition!
For the next few months, Jupiter, the "king" of the solar system, is the "star" attraction. This incredible planet is the topic of the Explorit Science Center Astronomy Club meeting this month.
Now is the best time of the year to view Jupiter as it shines brightly at -2.3 magnitude in the constellation Cancer. This massive gas giant nears Opposition on February 6. At the Opposition alignment, when the planet appears biggest and brightest, the planet is closest to Earth. Only the Moon and Venus are currently brighter in the night sky. Incredibly, Jupiter is viewable throughout the night--it rises when the Sun sets and it sets when the Sun rises.
Although Jupiter is easy to spot with unaided eyes, a small telescope will reveal the colorful cloud bands on the surface. Also visible with a telescope are some of its biggest moons--the Galilean satellites.
Explorit Science Center Astronomy Club will meet on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Explorit Science Center, 3141 5th Street, Davis. All ages are welcome to attend. Note the change in time for this meeting. The indoor featured presentation is followed by the outdoor star party and telescopes will be provided for night sky viewing!
You do not have to pay any dues to be a member of the club. If you are interested in astronomy, you are welcome to attend!
