For the past eight years, TechCrunch has hosted a bizarro tech world version of the Oscars called the Crunchies. The industry gets all dolled up, walks the "green carpet," and watches Silicon Valley insiders present trophies for categories like "Best On-Demand Service" and "Best Overall Startup." At the eighth annual Crunchies last Thursday, the best startup award was handed to Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, while outside demonstrators protested Uber’s privacy violations, treatment of its drivers, and distaste for the rule the law. One sign said, "UBER DESERVES A HIGH KALANICK."

Android tablets have had a rough go of things since the very beginning. For years, Android tablet makers were chasing one bad idea after another, until Google landed on the Nexus 7 and actually came up with a compelling counter to Apple’s larger and more expensive iPad. It led to a wave of low-end Android tablets that have sold well (especially in China), but often feel more like big phones than tablets.

AMC today proudly announced that Better Call Saul got off to a hugely successful start last night. The Bob Odenkirk-led Breaking Bad spinoff attracted 4.4 million viewers in the key 18-49 demographic, making it cable's biggest premiere ever in that demo — the only audience advertisers really care about.

Straight Outta Compton, the upcoming film based on the rise of NWA, is due out this summer, so it's high time we saw a trailer. In the film's first full-length spot, we're first treated to an introduction featuring Ice Cube and hip-hop's first billionaire Dr. Dre, rolling around Compton as they reminisce on their formative years there and the talent (like The Game and Kendrick Lamar) that has come up in the years since.
