Sub-Zero Weather Hits Dozens of States

Record-Shattering Cold 
Temperatures fell well below zero in 21 states today, including -18 in Lexington, Kentucky and -25 in Flint, Michigan. The cold blast has caused at least 25 deaths, triggered water main breaks in Nashville, and is wreaking havoc on emergency crews in many states. Ice breakers are in full steam up and down the nation's waterways, including the Potomac River and Lake Erie, which is 98 percent covered in ice.

$5 Billion Lost to Weather 
The record cold is also chilling the economy. A projected $5 billion has been lost as people hunker down at home. Air travelers have spent an extra $993 million on cancelled flights and snow and ice control have cost governments $2 billion. Snowed-in Canton, Mass. is already $400,000 over budget, but for those shovelling snow it’s a good time to pick up some extra cash.

Teenage Girls to ISIS? 
There is an urgent global appeal to find three British teenage girls who unexpectedly boarded a flight from London to Turkey to potentially join ISIS in Syria. Their families had no idea and hope the harsh Istanbul winter will have delayed the 16-year-old and 15-year-olds. Another girl from their school ran off in December and one expert said ISIS is no longer just appealing to disaffected youths.

White House vs. Giuliani 
The hashtag “ObamaLovesAmerica” was tweeted 54,000 times in the past 24 hours after Rudy Giuliani suggested the president does not. The former New York City mayor faced an immediate backlash and is not backing down. It’s made him the target of a biting attack from the White House with Obama’s spokesman saying: “I feel sorry for Rudy Giuliani today."

18-Year-Old’s Superbug Fight 
One of the seven people infected with a deadly superbug at UCLA Medical Center during an endoscopy procedure is an 18-year-old man who has been hospitalized for months. "We're talking about an infection on steroids that's highly resistant to treatment,” his attorney said. “You're gravely, gravely ill for a long period of time."

‘American Sniper’ Trial 
As the box office smash movie “American Sniper” about Chris Kyle heads to the Oscars Sunday, the real-life murder trial against the man accused of killing him is wrapping up. After more than 30 witnesses have testified, the defense has rested. Closing arguments could begin Monday and shooter Eddie Ray Routh’s mental health is up for debate.

Las Vegas Road Rage 
Tammy Meyers’ husband said his late wife knew her suspected shooter and spent “countless hours” giving him food and money. But last week, Erich Nowsch allegedly followed Meyers’ home and fired a gun at her. A neighbor of Nowsch said the 19-year-old suspect is not a bad person and “wouldn’t do anything like that.”
