Earliest known fossil of the genus Homo dates to 2.8 to 2.75 million years ago

A lower jaw with teeth recently found in the Afar region of Ethiopia represents the earliest known fossil record of the genus Homo, the group that contains hominins including modern humans, according to an international team of geoscientists and anthropologists. The fossil is about 2.8 million years old, predating previously discovered specimens from the genus by roughly 400,000 years. The team assessed the fossil’s age by dating the layers of volcanic ash surrounding it.
