Route Poisoning
Route Poisoning is a method of preventing a network from sending packets through a route that has become invalid. The route may have become invalid due to a cable being severed, the failure of a network node, etc.
When an invalid route has been detected, all the routers in the network will be informed that the invalid route has a hop count of 16 (infinity). This makes all nodes on the invalid route appear to be ‘infinitely distant’ and prevents any of the routers in the network from sending packets over the invalid route.
