New Notice of Intent: Larger Wind Turbine Blades

The Energy Department recently announced a notice of intent to issue a funding opportunity supporting the research and development of technology innovations that will improve the manufacturing, transportation, and assembly of wind turbine blades greater than 60 meters in length. Longer blades that can be installed on wind turbines at higher hub heights will help facilitate the deployment of the next generation of multi-megawatt turbines. One purpose of this potential funding opportunity is to help mitigate the transportation constraints associated with larger turbine blades, thus helping spur wind energy development in areas where economically viable wind resources can be accessed at greater heights. Energy Department Announces Collegiate Wind Competition 2016 Participants

The Energy Department has selected the 12 teams that will participate in the second U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition. The Collegiate Wind Competition challenges teams of undergraduate students to design and build a wind turbine, test the turbine against rigorous performance criteria, and develop a business plan to market their product. Intertwining academic coursework with tangible, hands-on learning, the Collegiate Wind Competition provides invaluable real-world experience as students prepare to enter the workforce. Collegiate Wind Competition 2016 will take place at the American Wind Energy Association's Annual WINDPOWER Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. Learn more about the Collegiate Wind Competition on WINDExchange's Web page.

IRS Issues New Tax Credit Guidance for Owners of Small Wind Turbines

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently published a notice that establishes certification requirements small wind turbine owners must meet to qualify for the 30% investment tax credit. For owners of wind turbines rated at 100 kilowatts of capacity or less to qualify for this tax credit under the new performance and quality guidance, the turbines must meet certain standards defined by the American Wind Energy Association or the International Electrotechnical Commission. These standards assist consumers in making informed purchasing decisions and help ensure that public funds are spent on distributed wind systems tested for performance, safety, function, and durability. The new guidance applies to small wind energy systems that are purchased or operational after January 26, 2015.Watch a recent webinar that featured representatives from the Wind Program and the IRS to learn more.

New Tool Demonstrates Offshore Wind Industry's Job Growth Potential

The Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has developed a tool that estimates potential jobs and other economic impacts associated with offshore wind development in the United States. Using the modeling tool, NREL found that an offshore wind industry could support thousands of jobs in the United States. For example, in the Gulf Coast, analyses show that a 500-megawatt offshore wind project has the potential to support 14,500 full-time jobs during construction and up to 650 long-term jobs. The tool is one of NREL's several user-friendly Jobs and Economic Development Impact models. Learn more about this project on the Wind Program's website or in NREL's report.

Secretary Moniz Announces Wind Program's Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Request to Congress

On February 2, Energy Secretary Moniz announced President Obama's $30 billionFiscal Year 2016 Congressional Budget Request for the Energy Department. Priority activity areas featured in the $145.5 million budget request for the Wind Program include offshore wind, wind plant optimization research and development, manufacturing competitiveness, and market acceleration and deployment.
