Is the Age of McDonald's Over?
In fact the very things people used to like about McDonald's--fast, cheap, plentiful, predictable food--have become the features that are working against it.

During he Spanish Civil War Americans orgnized the LIcoln Brigade to fight alongside the foes of Franco. The time has come for another such initiative in favor of eastern Ukraine.

The New Lunatic Fringe
To better understand the hate-fueled protests directed at President Obama we need to examine an earlier period of history when hyper-partisan extremists were out of control and threatened to destabilize our democracy.

It's got something on the White House. In a ceremony last Wed., Bolivian President Evo Morales marked the start of his third term at Tiwanaku, the crumbling remains of an ancient city 45 miles west of La Paz, which dates back almost 2,000 years.

Exporting Sherman's March
What intrigues me most is the possibility that the South today could come to oppose war by recognizing Sherman's victims in the victims of U.S. wars and occupations.

We all know, this current non-elected Eurocrat-ravaged EU -- which despises Greece, antagonizes Russia, wallows in the mire of Empire of Chaos vassalage, and treats most of its citizens as heavily-taxed garbage -- could hardly be described as "superb."

Suge Knight Arrest Reinforces Thug Image of Black Males
First it was fallen rap mogul Suge Knight's arrest for murder. Second the alleged murder took place in Compton. And third, it was rap. This is the perfect dysfunctional storm to get the tongues clucking again that Knight, rappers, and by extension young black males are hopelessly ensnared in the thug life.

Delusional America
Now it is Russian President Vladimir Putin who is being demonized. As Parry and I and Stephen F. Cohen, the most knowledgeable of the Russian experts, appreciate, Putin is not Saddam Hussein and Russia is not Iraq, Libya, Syria, Serbia, or Iran. To foment conflict with Russia that could lead to war is worse than irresponsible. America is both blind and deaf. It lives in delusions.

Seriously bummed when Redjellyfish disappeared
E-cards that matter and pre-empt the Hallmark bs in a few seconds or minutes. This formerly beautiful site made "redjellyfish ecards" easy to compose and send. There were beautiful and outstanding nature pictures and great environmental quotes that with minimal searching "fit any occasion." I've tried to find out why they suddenly disappeared with no results. But offer what may be better solutions...

Viewed from the underside of history, "American Sniper" was a tribute to the world's poor and oppressed -- especially to the heroic people of Iraq. It was about resisting bullies the way the Iraqis have since 2003.

More than a century after it sank and more than a decade after it was raised, scientists are finally getting a look at the hull of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first sub in history to sink an enemy warship. What they find may finally solve the mystery of why the hand-cranked submarine sank during the U.S. Civil War. "It's like unwrapping a Christmas gift after 15 years. We have been wanting to do this for many years now." It was covered with a hardened gunk of encrusted sand, sediment and rust that scientists call concretion. Last May, it was finally ready to be bathed in a solution of sodium hydroxide to loosen the encrustation. Then in August, scientists using small air-powered chisels and dental tools began the laborious job of removing the coating. After the Hunley was raised, the sand and the silt and the remains of the crew in the interior were removed.

Cellphones Cause Cancer: A Few Worthwhile Minutes from Attorney Jimmy Gonzales, 1972-2014

Every one of the Koch Republicans, and their oily Democratic cohorts, who voted to approve a State Department construction permit for TransCanada to build the KeystoneXL pipeline across America's international border with Canada are guilty of violating the Constitution's long-standing "Separation of Powers." This is not the first time a Republican Congress violated the Separation of Powers, but it is the first time they have attempted to subjugate the State Department and Executive Branch to the will of the Koch brothers' Legislative Branch; something not remotely Constitutional. During George W. Bush's presidency a Republican Congress voted to subjugate the Judicial Branch's authority; specifically to serve two Americans. Unlike President Obama who understands the Constitution, Bush signed legislation giving Republicans purview over another branch of government's authority.

It is not only our arguments, but more importantly, how we frame our arguments, that shape our perception of the issues. Each party has a narrative based on its ideological stance on a particular issue -- for example, women's reproductive health vs. "religious freedom," or "anthropogenic global warming" vs. "climate change."

Peter Greste, an Al Jazeera journalist who was detained in Egypt for 400 days, has been deported.

Bruce Gagnon, the coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, made the remarks during an interview with Press TV on Saturday following accusations that the Obama administration is clamping down on journalists who expose misconduct by the government.

Ebola cases have dropped to single digits in just a few months, defying even the most optimistic predictions. What happened and who's to congratulate? It's not just the W.H.O. or other large health organizations. A big push in local awareness and control was indispensable in saving lives. People can learn.

Policewoman arrests man for "walking while black" and either lies about it on the police cam...or...his is a classic case of the habitual and debilitating traumatic stress syndrome that all police operate under, where anything can stimulate an irrational "flash point" response, but especially a black man. Reality and perception take totally divergent paths.

A frank informational one-on-one talk with the American people would do wonders to break up the Israeli fifth column on Capitol Hill. The mindless pro-Israel-at-any-price consensus in American politics is heading for a crack up. The question is: does the President of the United States have the guts to press his advantage and -- for once -- put America's interests first?

Congress gave corporations a repatriation tax holiday in 2004. The results were a disaster for the economy. Even worse, the previous tax holiday is the reason so many companies now move jobs and factories and profit centers out of the U.S. They do this to hide profits offshore, waiting for the next tax holiday. This currently costs the country jobs, factories -- and up to $700 billion in taxes due.

The brutal Paris attacks have been exploited to undermine the very right it's become an emblem for -- freedom of expression -- while details contradicting the official narrative are suppressed. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has repeatedly said she's not running for president in 2016, but that isn't discouraging her most ardent supporters. This weekend backers of the Massachusetts Democrat say they're planning to hold more than 200 house parties across the country to pressure Warren to change her mind. Supporters include the liberal political action committees MoveOn.org and Democracy for America.

On Saturday, 60-odd Republicans from the Republican National Committee (about 1/3 of the RNC), headed by Reince Priebus, will fly to Israel for a nine day all-expenses paid trip. Financially sponsoring the trip is the American Family Association and leading it is activist pastor David Lane, whose "Renewal Project" that seeks to bring pastors into politics is bankrolled by the AFA. The trip will likely strengthen already strong ties between Republicans, Israel's Likud Party and, specifically, current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. That could, in turn, strengthen Netanyahu's hand in his perennial drive for heavier sanctions and/or military action against Iran.

Islamic state militants released a video Saturday saying they had executed Japanese hostage Kenji Goto. The video showed a hooded man standing over Goto with a knife held to his throat, followed by footage of a body with a head placed on it. Addressing Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the man says "Because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin."

The New England Patriots are among the most hated teams and most popular teams in the NFL, according to a poll this week. The Patriots, who play the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, are second to only the Dallas Cowboys among teams fans hate the most, according to Public Policy Polling. The top five: Cowboys (18 percent), Patriots (13), Chicago Bears (9), New York Giants (9) and Pittsburgh Steelers (9). The Pats were third on the list last year. But the Patriots are almost among the most popular teams. When fans are asked to name their single favorite team: Packers (15 percent), Cowboys (13), Seahawks (10), Denver Broncos (9), Patriots (9) and Steelers (9). This is confusing to a non-football fan.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced recalls Saturday for 2.12 million vehicles with defects that may cause airbags to deploy without warning. The recalled vehicles include: Acura MDX, Dodge Viper, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty, Honda Odyssey, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix and Toyota Avalon. The vehicles involved are from model years 2002 to 2004.

Hagel, who announced his resignation under pressure in November, told CNN all options must be considered in Iraq, including sending troops for non-combat roles such as gathering intelligence and locating Islamic State targets. "I think it may require a forward deployment of some of our troops ..." he said. "I would say we're not there yet. Whether we get there or not, I don't know." Hagel's comments echoed testimony by General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to Congress last fall when he said U.S. troops might have to take a larger role on the ground in Iraq.

"The traditional camp's concern is therefore not to eliminate the discrimination, but rather to conceal it in order to preserve the state's image internationally. In contrast, the Netanyahu government's goal is to make Jewish supremacy apparent and to make Arab citizens explicitly inferior--both in the Arabs' own eyes and in the eyes of Jews. As such, the Nation-State legislation is anti-Arab and racist at its core. For these reasons, the debate between the two camps is not about whether discrimination should or should not be stopped, but rather about how to continue it. Ironically, the Netanyahu government's approach is consistent with the formal principle of the rule of law. But this also exposes the clear similarity between the current Israeli government and the former apartheid regime of South Africa, which explicitly anchored the practice of racial supremacy in legislation."

Flight Logs Put Clinton, Dershowitz on Pedophile Billionaire's Sex Jet
Bill Clinton took repeated trips on the " Lolita Express"--the private passenger jet owned by billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein--with an actress in softcore porn movies whose name appears in Epstein's address book under an entry for "massages," according to flight logbooks obtained by Gawker and published today for the first time. The logs also show that Clinton shared more than a dozen flights with a woman who federal prosecutors believe procured underage girls to sexually service Epstein and his friends and acted as a "potential co-conspirator" in his crimes.

Thomas Ultican: The Illusion of "Failing Public Schools"by Diane Ravitch
Thomas Ultican left a good job in Silicon Vally to become a teacher of high school math and physics in a school where half the students are English learners. He discovered that teaching was much harder than anything else he had ever done. In his reading, he was struck by the long-standing charge that American public education is failing. He remembered hearing about this in the 1950s, the 1960, and so on until "A Nation at Risk" in 1983. Since then, the drumbeat of criticism has been unending, and is still untrue. He never understood how a nation whose schools were always "failing" could rise to become the most powerful nation in the world. He came to the conclusion that the claims of the reformers are a myth, an illusion. Teachers and schools are facing steep challenges, then blamed for the challenges they are working to overcome. None of this makes any sense. read the link

Where did the missing oil go? New study says some is sitting on the Gulf floor
a new study led by Florida State University Professor of Oceanography Jeff Chanton finds that some 6 million to 10 million gallons are buried in the sediment on the Gulf floor, about 62 miles southeast of the Mississippi Delta. "This is going to affect the Gulf for years to come," Chanton said. "Fish will likely ingest contaminants because worms ingest the sediment, and fish eat the worms. It's a conduit for contamination into the food web."

Crystal light: New family of light-converting materials points to cheaper, more efficient solar power and LEDs -- Scienc
Engineers have shone new light on an emerging family of solar-absorbing materials that could clear the way for cheaper and more efficient solar panels and LEDs. The materials, called perovskites, are particularly good at absorbing visible light, but had never been thoroughly studied in their purest form: as perfect single crystals. Using a new technique, researchers grew large, pure perovskite crystals and studied how electrons move through the material as light is converted to electricity.

Duncan Threatens to Punish Chicago If They Don't Give PARCC; by Diane Ravitch
Remember a few months ago when everyone was wringing their hands and agreeing there was too much testing? Remember Arne Duncan said testing was sucking the oxygen out of the classroom? That was then. This is now. Duncan is upset that Chicago is backing away from Commmon Core PARCC testing. Duncan has threatened to cut off $1.2 billion in state aid if Chicago doesn't give the PARCC.This is crazy. The Secretary of Education is not supposed to tell states and districts what tests to use. He has overstepped his bounds, as he has done so often in the past. He has no understanding of federalism or of the limits of the federal role in education. The law says that no federal official may try to direct, control, or influence curriculum or instruction. Tests influence curriculum and instruction. By funding two tests and then compelling states to use them, he is flouting the law and should be sued

Can Students Have Too Much Tech? - By SUSAN PINKER; NYTimes
More technology in the classroom has long been a policy-making panacea. Mounting evidence shows that showering students, especially those from struggling families, with networked devices will not shrink the class divide in education. If anything, it will widen it. Research shows "Students who gain access to a home computer between the 5th and 8th grades tend to witness a persistent decline in reading and math scores," the economists wrote, adding that license to surf the Internet was also linked to lower grades in younger children."In fact, the students' academic scores dropped and remained depressed for as long as the researchers kept tabs on them. What's worse, the weaker students (boys, African-Americans) were more adversely affected than the rest. When their computers arrived, their reading scores fell off a cliff.MUST READ as the tech industry gears up to replace teachers with tech
