During the first StoryCon meeting, which I founded and organized in 2002, a storyteller from the UK closed the meeting with this story, which says a lot about the power of story as it relates to the truth.

No more AUMFs! No more 'unitary executives'!: We're Already Losing Our Democracy and All Our Freedoms to the 2001 AUMF
Before even considering Obama's flawed AUMF, it's critical to cancel the even worse 2001 AUMF, which is the basis for Bush's and Obama's gutting of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, writes TCBH! journalist Dave Lindorff
Today's "trade agreements" should really be called "global corporate agreements" because they're mostly about protecting the assets and profits of these global corporations rather than increasing American jobs and wages. The deals don't even guard against currency manipulation by other nations.
Polls show Democrats want a contest, not a coronation, for their presidential nomination. There are two compelling reasons for a challenge in the Democratic primaries: We need a big debate about the direction of the country, and a growing populist movement would benefit from a populist challenge to Hillary.
By Tom Engelhardt
Engelhardt: Walking Back the American Twenty-First Century? I never fail to be amazed -- and that's undoubtedly my failing. I mean, if you retain a capacity for wonder you can still be awed by a sunset, but should you really be shocked that the sun is once again sinking in the West? Maybe not. The occasion for such reflections: machine guns in my hometown.
Gay marriage is simply the logical and appropriate extension of the idea that in a constitutionally limited democratic republic, a vital function of government is to protect the rights of minorities. It's called "civil rights." Gay marriage is a civil rights issue, plain and simple, and entirely in keeping with the egalitarian vision of this nation's Founders.
No, this is not an episode of The Twilight Zone. Non-profit organization Mars One just announced the 100 finalists for its mission to colonize the Red Planet. The final group will consist of 24 individuals who will be split into six groups of four. One mission is scheduled to launch every two years starting in 2025. The goal of the Netherlands-based non-profit is to start a permanent colony on Mars -- if the mission is launched, the colonists will never return to Earth.

The Onion Reviews 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'
The Onion's movie critic Peter K. Rosenthal reviews 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' in this week's Film Standard. If this isn't the best review you've seen, please be sure to post a link to the better one. While I gather the movie does a great job portraying the general topic of sex in the movies--and maybe for a few in "real life"--I believe this review captures it all with brutal accuracy.
Education and class: America's new aristocracy
This is a fascinating and disturbing article about the hardening of class lines in the U.S.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Tuesday that he has given U.S. Attorneys a 90-day deadline to evaluate whether they can bring cases against any individuals for their role in the 2008 financial crisis.
A cyberespionage group with a toolset similar to ones used by U.S. intelligence agencies has infiltrated key institutions in countries including Iran and Russia. Kaspersky Lab released a report Monday that said the tools were created by the "Equation" group, which it stopped short of linking to the U.S. National Security Agency. The tools, exploits and malware used by the group -- named after its penchant for encryption -- have strong similarities with NSA techniques described in top-secret documents leaked in 2013. Countries hit the most by Equation include Iran, Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and China. Targets in those countries included the military, telecommunications, embassies, government, research institutions and Islamic scholars, Kaspersky said. Kaspersky's most striking finding is Equation's ability to infect the firmware of a hard drive, or the low-level code...

Lee is pleased that President Obama has come to Congress seeking a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) for the fight with Islamic State (ISIL), as she has for years complained about the failure of the White House to bring Congress into the deliberations about questions of war and peace. But she is not satisfied with what Obama is proposing.
President Barack Obama has hit back at a ruling in Texas that brought to a halt his controversial migrant plan.
The NSA has figured out how to hide spying software deep within hard drives made by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and other top manufacturers giving the agency the means to eavesdrop on the majority of the world's computers, according to cyber researchers and former operatives. That long-sought and closely guarded ability was part of a cluster of spying programs discovered by Kaspersky Lab, the Moscow-based security software maker that has exposed a series of Western cyberespionage operations.
In 1993 the Supreme Court ruled that it is legal to execute an innocent person?
Argued before the Supreme Court in 1992 and decided in a contentious 6-3 ruling in 1993, Herrera v. Collins states that anyone who is found legally guilty in a court of law, even if later evidence determines that they are actually innocent, do not have explicit constitutional protection under the 8th amendment's wording on cruel and unusual punishment.
"The US government released a 1987 Defense Department report detailing US assistance to Israel in its development of a hydrogen bomb, which skirted international standards. Israelis are 'developing the kind of codes that will enable them to make hydrogen bombs. That is, codes that detail fission and fusion processes on a microscopic and macroscopic level,' said the report, the release of which comes before Netanyahu's speech in front of the US Congress in which he will oppose any deal that allows Iran's legal nuclear program to persist. 'I am struck by the degree of cooperation on specialized war making devices between Israel and the US. It's our basic position that in 1987 the Department of Defense discovered that Israel had a nuclear weapons program, detailed it and then has covered it up for 25 years in violation of the Symington and Glenn amendments, costing taxpayers $86 billion.'"

Despite all the tough talk and ultimatums, Greece and its creditors in the 19-country eurozone are still expected to cobble together some sort of deal that will allow the country to remain a member of the euro currency. Investors and European policymakers are not panicking despite a breakdown in talks between the two sides over the new Greek government's attempt to renegotiate its financial bailout. That's likely because they've been here before -- the eurozone has in recent years often run into moments of brinkmanship, often with Greece. Each time, a deal was clinched eventually.
Parents, Teachers and Taxpayers - Beware the Achievement First Inc. Money Grab in New Haven - Wait What? Jonathan Pelto
Jonathan Pelto, a former legislator and now Connecticut's premier blogger, warns that a money grab for charters is on the horizon, while the state's neediest schools are ignored. his Wednesday, February 18, 2015, Governor Malloy will play his hand as to whether he will insert taxpayer funds into next year's state budget in order to fund Steve Perry's dream of opening a privately-owned, but publicly-funded charter school in Bridgeport. An out-of-state company is also counting on Malloy to come through with the cash needed to expand their charter school chain into Stamford, Connecticut. Both charter school applications were vehemently opposed by the Bridgeport and Stamford Boards of Education. |
