What is ultra-nationalism and how is it spread? If it's not nazis marching with swastikas would you recognize it? Most people don't. Heres what it actually looks like.

The Obama administration wants a rubber stamp on its unwise, unlimited, and unauthorized new war in the Middle East. It shouldn't get it.

Khamenei knows very well that this is the opportunity to play Iran's nuclear cards in order to get the sanctions removed. But the United States appears to be using its sanctions card to force Iran to accept a reduction of roughly 75 percent in its enrichment capacity and not even offering to lift all sanctions in the short run even if Iran caves in.

What local communities are doing today in Syria to protect and preserve our shared cultural heritage is not going to solve their and our archeological crisis. But rarely, one imagines in the midst of war have citizens undertaken such Phoenix like preservation and restoration work for the benefit of mankind.

As senseless as the loss of three promising young people was, they were not the only victims of this horrendous act. The killer is a victim of a sick subculture in our society.

The Casino Republic
It was Adelson who prepared the witches' brew that is now endangering Israel's lifeline to Washington. His stooge, Dermer, induced the Republicans in Congress--all of them dependent on Adelson's largesse or hoping to be so--to invite Netanyahu to give an anti-Obama speech before both Houses. He has threatened to invest unlimited sums of money to prevent the reelection of any politician who is absent from Netanyahu's speech.

Update of Minsk Peace Deal
The Saker and I are in agreement that the provisions of the peace deal are ridiculous and cannot and will not be implemented. However, The Saker sees an advantage for the republics in the provision, if implemented, to remove heavy weapons from the conflict zones.

A plan to bring one of the world's largest online gambling companies to Atlantic City has seemingly stalled, and some critics are pointing their fingers at New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire casino mogul and one of the GOP's most influential donors. State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democrat who sponsored the bill that legalized online gambling in the state, blamed the company's inability to get licensed on Christie. "Christie put a stop to it," said Lesniak. "With a high degree of confidence it's apparent that's exactly what has happened."

Saudi Arabia, and the other Sunni countries in the Middle East, have been financially and morally supporting the growing and evolving Sunni insurgency against Shias in the region for years. They have intentionally bankrolled groups whose mission it is to wipe out the Shia minority in the region. First they started with al-Qaeda, and then they bankrolled what became ISIS.

In the book THE THEOCONS: SECULAR AMERICA UNDER SIEGE (2006), Damon Linker has alerted progressives and liberals to watch out for certain conservative American Catholics. But Pope Francis's remarks about gender in a recently published interview should alert progressives and liberals to watch out for him and the other bishops. They are up to no good.

Tesla's Elon Musk says they've created a battery to power your home and it's coming soon, very soon
Last night, Tesla's CEO and in-house genius Elon Musk revealed some amazing plans: "We are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people's houses or businesses fairly soon," CEO Elon Musk said, according to Bloomberg.

"In December 2014 the discussion of 'police' began to look at the roots of the institution. Peter Gelderloos concluded a three-part study in CounterPunch flatly stating, 'The police are a racist, authoritarian institution that exists to protect the powerful in an unequal system.'[1] Sam Mitrani, a scholar of the Chicago police, concluded similarly, 'The police were not created to protect and serve the population. They were not created to stop crime, at least not as most people understand it.' [2] Yet a physician in Ann Arbor, Catherine Wilkerson, caused a local stir when she stated 'that neither racism nor racist police violence can be abolished under this economic system, i.e. under capitalism.'"

Data-storage for eternity, stored in the form of DNA
Scrolls thousands of years old provide us with a glimpse into long-forgotten cultures and the knowledge of our ancestors. In this digital era, in contrast, a large part of our knowledge is located on servers and hard drives. It will be a challenge for this data to survive 50 years, let alone thousands of years. Researchers are therefore searching for new ways to store large volumes of data over the long term.

Making teeth tough: Beavers show way to improve our enamel -- ScienceDaily
Beavers don't brush their teeth or drink fluoridated water, but a new study reports beavers do have protection against tooth decay built into the chemical structure of their teeth: iron. This pigmented enamel, the researchers found, is both harder and more resistant to acid than regular enamel, including that treated with fluoride. This discovery is among others that could lead to a better understanding of human tooth decay, earlier detection of the disease and improving on current fluoride treatments.

Magnitude of plastic waste going into the ocean calculated: 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans per year -
How much mismanaged plastic waste is making its way from land to ocean has been a decades-long guessing game. Now scientists have put a number on the global problem. Their study found between 4.8 and 12.7 million metric tons of plastic entered the ocean in 2010 from people living within 50 kilometers of the coastline.

I don't know what year, (or where or why)this interview was done. Youtube just says when it was posted, not conducted. But Jon looks quite young, and certainly interesting to see how he's "evolved" since. He's only 52 now, and should be awfully interesting to see what direction his career takes now...

"In a macro sense, however, our invasion and occupation of Iraq was not a "kill them or they will kill us" scenario. History has borne that fact out, and that lack of context makes "American Sniper" a dangerous film.

The New York Times columnist on all things media, who died Thursday night at the absurdly young age of 58, waded into the greatest debates of our time with a warmth, humor and humility that belied his amazing ability to get to the heart of the matter -- as he did in his final interview, just hours before his death, with Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Edward Snowden.

Boehner: 'I love Mitch,' but this Homeland Security mess is all his fault
Newsflash to Republicans: You control Congress, you own the shutdown. So Speaker John Boehner can scream all he wants for Democrats to "get off their ass," but the fact that our nation's chief national security agency may shut down in 16 days is on his head.

"Renowned linguist and well-respected political commentator, Noam Chomsky, was interviewed by journalist David Barsamian for Jacobin. In the fascinating and thought-provoking conversation the two touch on the origins of ISIS, America's relationship with Israel, among other foreign policy topics."

The People Organized for the Defense of Equal Rights in Santa Barbara (PODER) calls for a boycott of the Santa Barbara News Press for its use of hate speech to describe Latino immigrants. PODER believes that hate speech masquerading as free speech must be accountable to the citizens and that fair and ethical standards of journalism should prevail in our news media.

Venezuelan Legislator Gives Details on Thwarted Coup
Venezuelan Government just dismantled another MASSIVE coup attempt. On a Special TV appearance on the night of Feb. 12, 2015, Diosdado Cabello, President of Venezuelan National Assembly, and Jorge Rodriguez, Mayor of El Libertador Municipality (Latin America's largest poor people's neighborhood) disclosed the plan which included a false-flag air strike against targets chosen by Opposition Member of the NA Julio Borges. The targets included the Miraflores Presidential Palace, the Ministry of Defense and TeleSur HQ. Tucano military planes - now grounded by the Venezuelan AF because of technical issues - were going to be used for the strikes. As part of the media strategy - which War on Economy was being waged for - Hanna Dyer, an AP reporter, twitted: "The end is near" (the note was passed to Cabello by Eva Golinger). "What do you know, Mrs. Dyer?" - asked Diosdado Cabello.

Ukraine's legislators made a huge mistake. While lobbying the U.S. Senate for lethal military aid, the delegation provided Sen. Jim Inhofe (R, OK) fake evidence of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. The image in this brief report shows one of the fakes. The image of a "recent" Russian invasion of Ukraine (left image) turned out to be Russian troops in South Ossetia in the Summer of 2008. Sen. Inhofe distributed the photos to media only to find out that the images were fake. The was more than happy to object to this nonsense. The Ukraine delegation has "lost face" as a credible source. This is hardly the first time Ukraine's representatives have fabricated evidence of a Russian invasion. It is the first time they've been called on it by a membrer of Congress.

The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is a very difficult one to make, and can be life-changing to hear. Getting this diagnosis at a time when the benefits of medical cannabis are becoming better known, and laws are changing, is both a blessing and a curse. This article chronicles one personal story, alongside the national realization - helped along by Dr. Sanjay Gupta - that we may have been misled about a powerful plant.

A new truce agreement in Ukraine rekindles hope that the bloodshed can be reduced if not stopped, but Official Washington's gross misunderstanding of the crisis, blaming everything on Russia's President Putin, raises doubts and portends a potentially grave catastrophe, writes Robert Parry.

Less than six weeks on his powerful Capitol Hill perch, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is on the verge of watching one of his most important promises -- to never again shut down the government -- go up in smoke. "Let me make it clear: There will be no government shutdowns," McConnell said the day after he won reelection and a Republican rout gave his party the Senate majority.

Sen. Jim Inhofe has a bit of explaining to do after he provided the Washington Free Beacon with a cache of exclusive photos proving Russia's involvement with the Ukrainian separatist movement -- depicting charred and headless corpses -- only to be called out for using old photos from 2008. Inhofe and his staffers claimed that the photos were further proof that the US needed to ramp up their assistance to Ukraine, perhaps by providing them with weapons, in order to strike back at Vladimir Putin. "The Obama admin is so slow to recognize" Russia's involvement, Inhofe told the Free Beacon. "They just don't want people to believe these things are happening."

S Secretary of State John Kerry, along with trusty British and Polish allies, warned Russia of more sanctions if the Minsk truce was not -fully implemented -.

In the South Carolina prison system, accessing Facebook is an offense on par with murder, rape, rioting, escape and hostage-taking.

It's up to Germany to clean up its act on Greece. The choice is stark. The EU may embark on a quadruple-dip recession as the ECB further destroys what is left of the European middle class. Or Germany, reflecting the thinking among its captains of industry, may tell the EU -- Troika included -- that the way to go is to shift the strategic, trade and political focus from West to the East.

Jeb Bush's Very Bad, Terrible, Horrible Week; by Diane Ravitch
Jeb Bush prides himself on being a master of technology. He was one of the main movers behind a report called "Digital Learning NOW!," which was underwritten by a score of technology companies. Many of those same companies are sponsors of Bush's Foundation for Educational Excellence, and he has actively promoted replacing teachers with technology. A reporter in Maine traced the links between Bush and his sponsors and won a major journalism award for this story. But technologically speaking, this was a bad week for Jeb Bush. First, in an effort to demonstrate transparency, he released a trove of private emails, not knowing that he was making public the emails, addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases, social security numbers of people who had corresponded with him. Then, he had another tech problem. He hired some guy to be his campaign's technology director who... just read the link Di

CURMUDGUCATION: What's The Matter With Indiana; by Peter Greene
A MUST READ: What is going on there has nothing to do with education, nothing to do with children, and everything to do with politics, power, and money. "n the modern era of education reform, each state has tried to create its own special brand of educational dysfunction. If the point of Common Core related reforms was to bring standardization to the country's many and varied state systems; it has failed miserably in fifty different ways. What Indiana provides is an example of what happens when the political process completely overwhelms educational concerns. If there is anyone in the Indiana state capitol more worried about education students than in political maneuvering and political posturing, it's not immediately evident who that person might be. The current marquee conflagration of the moment is the announcement of a new Big Standardized Test that will take twelve hours MORE...
