We've been corresponding with a veterinarian via email about an aggression problem involving one of her client's dogs. The veterinarian provided us with some information about the dog and the problem in her first email. We asked questions, she obtained more information from the client. With this additional information, the entire picture of the case changed. What at first seemed to be onset of aggression related to the presence of the new husband in the home, now has the possibility of the influence of at least two medical issues, and is clearly a problem that pre-dates the husband's arrival.
This email exchange illustrates once again how absolutely crucial a thorough behavioral history is to successfully understanding, managing, and resolving pet behavior problems. With insufficient information, it's extremely likely we'll all go down dead-end rabbit holes that will initially fool us into thinking we know what's going on with the pet, only to find out later we were sadly mistaken. In the meantime we've wasted the client's time and money with recommendations that really weren't what the problem required, perhaps put people at increased risk of being bitten, increased the client's frustration, and made it more likely the owner will give up on the pet, or perhaps turn to harsher more intimidating tactics in order to suppress the unwanted behavior.
You can avoid these negative outcomes by learning to take the kind of behavioral history that gives you the "big picture" of behavior issues and increases the chances of successful management and resolution.
