POLITICS
A record number of Americans claim to be independent. They are kidding themselves.
More than four in 10 Americans -- 43 percent -- say they are political independents in a new Gallup poll. That's a new record high. It's also highly misleading. What we have here isn't so much a rise in political independence as much as a rise in the desire to be labeled "independent." Indeed, almost every indicator shows that the American people are actually becoming more polarized, more electorally predictable, and less swing-y -- i.e. less independent.  Read full article »

France’s tough task in reacting to the horrific attack on Charlie Hebdo
The slaughter by Islamic fanatics on Wednesday of nearly a dozen French journalists, several of whom I have known for decades, is a bitter, heavy price for that nation to pay for being what it is: a haven of free expression and intellectual combat; a country that has taken in the foreign-born more easily than most and worked, if imperfectly, to assimilate them; and a military power willing to fight enemies abroad in the name of universal values.  Read full article »
EJ Dionne: The right’s wrong idea of governance
This will be no ordinary Congress, so there are no ordinary ways for judging how effective it will be at governing. That is, in any event, a preposterous standard to hold up as a brand-spanking-new goal. Isn’t governing what Congress was supposed to be doing all along? Imagine an everyday citizen making a New Year’s resolution promising that this year, for a change, he or she would actually show up for work.  Read full article »
Charlie Hebdo stands solidly for free expression. The West must do no less.
SEVERAL PUBLISHERS in Western countries have disgraced themselves in recent years with self-censorship to avoid being targeted by Islamic militants. The French newspaper Charlie Hebdo did the opposite: Even after its offices were firebombed in 2011, and even after its editor was put on an al-Qaeda wanted list, it continued to courageously publish cartoons and articles lampooning Islam — as well as Christianity, Judaism and established religion in general.   Read full article »

Mental illness turned my ex-husband into someone I didn’t recognize. Still, his death left me reeling.
My ex-husband died recently. Mike (not his real name) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two weeks before he passed away.I’m sad he died so young — he was just 50 — but there’s also an emotional distance. We separated more than 12 years ago. Our friends and I watched as Mike’s severe mental illness and refusal to stay on his meds changed him from the person we all knew “before.” He lost friends and family. Only his mother and one childhood friend regularly visited. The rest of us … well, the paranoia and abusive phone calls at 2 a.m. can push away even the most dedicated friend.  Read full article »

Schools aren’t teaching enough about sexism. It’s the best way to end dating violence.
Teenagers’ opinions about when intimate-partner violence is acceptable or not can be influenced by the way they perceive men and women and the relationships between them. Simply telling young people that violence is wrong won’t stop it happening. Schools need to teach children about gender and sexuality first in order to prevent violence becoming seen as acceptable in certain situations.  Read full article »

Firms are selling the “Internet of Things” hard at this year’s CES. But are consumers buying it?
If tech firms have their way, everything you use on a daily basis, from your toothbrush to your car, will one day be connected to the Internet. At this year’s International CES — the consumer tech industry’s annual Las Vegas confab -- you can’t go more than a few steps without hearing someone talking about a way to connect something new to the Internet. But as companies rush to create apps and embed chips in everything from your blankets to your shoes, it’s unclear whether consumers are as hot on the “smart everything” trend.  After all, people probably don’t need an alert on their phone to tell them when their toast is ready — the bread popping out is a pretty good clue.  Read full article »

Companies have more data than ever. That’s risky.

But with more and more Internet connected devices entering the market, the web of commercial data collection and surveillance surrounding consumers may get even more concerning, both for individuals and for the companies that maintain that web.  Read full article »

NBC News correspondent Maria Shriver thinks that the new movie “Still Alice” is important and compelling. Carolyn Hax: Someday-mom’s confession: She’s not a natural ‘kid person.’
Adapted from a recent online discussion. Hi Carolyn:I am getting married to a wonderful man and could not be more excited. He and I both want to have children within the next few years. The thing is, I’m not great with kids; I was even adamantly against having children until I began to change my mind a few years ago (before we started dating). I didn’t grow up around them, my friends don’t have them, and the only exposure I had was as a camp counselor. My future sister-in-law has two kids, and I get along with them pretty well, but often find I don’t know what to do or say around them. Do I need to find a way to spend more time around kids so I’m ready for my own?  Read full article »
