We have two covers this week. In our American edition we report on the rise of Hispanics. By mid-century, more than one in four Americans will be Latino. Nativists are alarmed by immigrants who, they fear, are tied to homelands racked by corruption and crime. We argue that, on the contrary, Hispanics will provide a greying United States with a dose of youth and energy.
In our other editions we look at the enduring dominance of Chinese manufacturing. Even as China moves upmarket it is hanging on to low-cost production—and strengthening its supply chain across South-East Asia. From India to Africa and South America, that will make economic development harder
