The court has declared a mistrial after the jury was hung. Under state law, a second hung jury results in an automatic life sentence. A jury convicted Arias in 2013 of murdering ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander but deadlocked on punishment. Alexander had been shot in the head, stabbed nearly 30 times, and his throat was cut from ear to ear in 2008.
