News from The Hill ATF again under Republican fire By Tim Devaney The much-maligned Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is again coming under fire from Republicans and gun rights groups, who are pressing bills aimed at reining in the agency’s power and abolishing it altogether. The recent attacks follow ATF’s recent proposal to prohibit a popular type of armor-piercing ammunition is a backhanded attempt to render useless AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, critics say.
