Thundersnow and other made-up James Bond films

Afternoon all,

Today we’ve got a few reads which all have two seemingly competing elements - putting on make-up when you can’t see, starting a call centre in a country where phone lines don’t work, Mein Kampf raising money for the Red Cross and thunder in the snow.

Putting on eyeliner is tricky. But it’s really tricky when you’re blind. There’s little sensation in the eyelids making it difficult to feel how it has been applied. So some people get round this by getting eyeliner permanently tattooed on. It’s just one of the tricks used by blind people. Methodically counting the number of brushstrokes of foundation and blusher is another.

How do blind people put on their make-up?

Indian call centres are now a normal part of everyday life. But when Pramod Bhasin started the first ever call centre in India people thought he was bonkers. He says that, given the difference in wages, it was so obvious an idea he was surprised no-one had done it. There was one main hurdle - often Indian phone lines didn’t work. People would have three phone lines in their houses because one would always be out of service. We can see how that would put a spanner in the works.

Whenever John Murphy tells anyone that his Irish grandfather translated Hitler's Mein Kampf, the first question tends to be, "Why did he do that?" It’s quickly followed by, "Was he a Nazi?" He wasn’t a Nazi and did it in the name of accuracy. The Nazis asked him to do the translation. It’s not clear why. They soon changed their minds. So his wife went back to Germany to get the manuscript and they published anyway. One publisher even contributed money from sales of this serialised version to the Red Cross.

Thundersnow is not the title of the next James Bond film. It’s thunder and snow at the same time. If you haven’t heard of it that may be because it is fairly rare. Thunderstorms are more likely to happen in warm, humid conditions. But it is not unheard of and it looks like the UK will be getting some thundersnow action this weekend. Other weather events that sound like Bond films are frostquake and firenado. Thundersleet, on the other hand, could be saved for the parody.
