Killer in controversial LAPD lecture had backing from law enforcement officials in parole bid

The Mexican Mafia gang member at the center of controversy this week after Los Angeles police arranged a meeting in which he spoke to a private group about his criminal past, has a close history with law enforcement that goes well beyond that event, records reviewed by The Times show. A state parole board recently decided that Rene Enriquez, 52, should be released, according to records obtained by The Times. When Enriquez sought parole last year after serving prison time for two murders, officials from 11 law enforcement agencies wrote letters describing how he helped them with investigations and prosecutions. His fate is now in the hands of Gov. Jerry Brown, who has about three more weeks to decide whether he should be freed.
