'The events over the past year ... culminating with the destructive and coercive attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, really highlight the growing threat that we face in cyberspace,' a senior administration official said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters." WAR AUTHORIZATION ACTION COMING IN A FEW WEEKS: CORKER - Jen Bendery: “Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Tuesday that he expects the White House to send war authorization language to Congress in the coming weeks -- a step that would move lawmakers closer to finally putting parameters on the nation's months-long war against the Islamic State. Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters he's been having 'fairly positive discussions' with the White House about the need to get moving on a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force for the military actions against the Islamist militant group. He said he talked directly to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during a joint event in Tennessee on Friday, and to the White House legal counsel on Monday. ‘I'm hopeful they're going to send something over in the next few weeks,’ Corker said. ‘Hopeful.’ It's been five months since the U.S began bombing Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. In that time, the U.S. has spent more than $1 billion, participated in more than 1,700 air strikes, authorized roughly 3,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and lost three U.S. soldiers. SOME DEMS SEE MINIMUM WAGE HIKE IN EXCHANGE FOR KEYSTONE - Sam Stein, Dave Jamieson and Sam Lachman: “At a recent conference meeting, Senate Democrats eager to see the federal minimum wage increased from $7.25 an hour were presented with a proposal. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) suggested that Democrats could offer a trade to their Republican colleagues: In exchange for agreeing to legislation authorizing the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, Heitkamp said, Democrats could demand that Republicans consent to raising the wage floor. Several Democratic aides, who confirmed that Heitkamp made the proposal, say she mentioned a minimum wage increase as one of several items the party could extract from Republicans in exchange for backing the pipeline. 'Her pitch was basically we should use Keystone as a chit to trade for other things,' said one aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. The idea was dismissed without much discussion, another aide said, since the majority of Senate Democrats don't share Heitkamp's fervent desire to see the pipeline built. GOP BASE NOT EXCITED BY MITT ROMNEY, PART 1,000,000 - I mean, I, figured Mitt had to be in retire, but he wasn't in retire!"Igor Bobic: “[T]he prospect of another Romney campaign failed to capture the hearts of social and fiscal conservatives gathered this week in the nation's capital to hammer out the policy agenda for the new Republican-controlled Congress. The two-day ‘Opportunity for All, Favoritism for None’conference was hosted by the Heritage Foundation, an influential conservative think tank. The event brought together activists and Republican lawmakers looking to promote conservative solutions on education, defense, religious liberty and marriage -- issues that potential 2016 candidates will need to tackle ahead of what is shaping up to be a contentious primary. But when asked about Romney, an establishment Republican who failed to unseat President Barack Obama in 2012, several attendees said thanks, but no thanks.” [HuffPost]
What about the gifts? “[Romney’s] argument to his former supporters, says one who spoke with him, is that he came very close in the last election against an incumbent president with a good economy. STEVE SCALISE POSITION ON SLAVERY UNCLEAR - The Hill “Six years before he spoke to a white supremacist group, while he was a state legislator, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) voted against a resolution apologizing for slavery, according to a 1996 article from New Orleans's Times-Picayune. Scalise later backed a watered-down version that expressed ‘regret’ for slavery. But the article identifies him as one of two lawmakers on the Louisiana House and Governmental Affairs Committee who tried to kill the original resolution, which apologized to African-Americans for the state’s role ‘in the establishment and maintenance of the institution of slavery.’ According to the paper, Scalise argued that there was no reason to apologize for something that had been done more than a century ago, before he was born. ‘Why are you asking me to apologize for something I didn't do and had no part of?’ Scalise is quoted as saying in the newspaper. ‘I am not going to apologize for what somebody else did.’ Scalise spokeswoman Moira Smith did not respond to two emails and a voice message seeking comment about the congressman’s vote.” [The Hill]

It was not my intention to trivialize the Holocaust nor to compare the President to Adolf Hitler. The mention of Hitler was meant to represent the face of evil that still exists in the world today. I now realize that the use of Hitler invokes pain and emotional trauma for those affected by the atrocities of the Holocaust and victims of anti-Semitism and hate. The terrorist attacks in Paris should remind us of the evil that still exists. Hitler was the face of evil, perpetrating genocide against six million Jews and millions of other victims. Today, we are facing the evil of Islamic extremists who are attempting to instill fear and murdering the lives of innocent people from Paris to Nigeria to Jerusalem and all over the world.
