LA Train Disaster 
Officials said it is incredible no one was killed today when a commuter Metrolink train heading to Los Angeles struck a truck on the rails, sending a fireball into the sky. The entire train derailed as passengers scrambled for their lives. Among those injured, three are in critical condition. As investigators comb through what’s left of the truck, its driver is being questioned.

Caught on Camera 
The blast could be felt a mile away. A New Jersey home exploded this morning after 75 residences were evacuated with reports of a gas leak. A police dash cam captured the sudden moment — the structure turned into splinters, injured at least 15 people and now 300 homes in the area are without gas service or electricity on a brutally cold day.

Frozen Nation 
Snow, sleet and freezing rain continue to paralyze parts of the South, as temperatures in 23 states were at or below zero today. Thirty have died from weather-related causes in Tennessee, and burst pipes in Kentucky have left tens of thousands without water. Glens Falls, New York hit a record low temp of -20 and in North Carolina there was a dusting of snow on the beach.

Paris Drone Mystery 
Small drones were spotted flying over the U.S. Embassy, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and other sensitive locations around Paris after midnight last night. Investigators don’t know who was flying them, or why. And security experts well beyond France are concerned about the potential threat posed by drones, which are not easily detected by radar.

'American Sniper’ Trial 
The prosecution’s final piece of evidence against defendant Eddie Ray Routh was a recorded apology in which he said, “I don’t know why I did it, but I did it.” Jurors must weigh his mental state as a factor in the shooting deaths of Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield. Kyle’s widow spoke with NBC’s Al Roker and said the “horrific” details of the testimony have been “hard to listen to, but I have faith in the jury.”
