Proton pump inhibitors are some of the most prescribed medications, and are the third-highest-selling class of drugs in the United States. Although they are widely used, people still have questions about them. From what PPIs are used for to side effects and safety, here are some things you should know.

PPIs are prescribed for a variety of acid-related conditions, including:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which acid from the stomach flows back up into the esophagus
  • Peptic ulcer, a sore in the lining of the stomach or small intestine caused by stomach acid and digestive juices
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition in which tumors in the pancreas or small intestine cause the stomach to produce too much acid
