Greece, and especially its charismatic and brilliant Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis, are going up against the European Austerity Powers that Be. Who will blink first? There is not much time to find out with a repayment due by the end of the month that Greece cannot pay.

"You don't have to be a vegan to be repulsed by an account in The Times revealing the moral depths to which the federal government" says the New York Times

We got here by cutting taxes for the rich, gutting government, deferring maintenance, and letting a few billionaires harvest our public wealth through privatization, etc. We'll get out of it by fixing the trade deficit, repairing our infrastructure, undoing policy mistakes that have continued since the Reagan era, and ending "trickle down" tax cuts.

For decades, there have been U.S. Cardinals and Bishops who have served the conservatism and the Republican party. These members of US Catholic royalty played profoundly significant roles in bringing the USA to where it is today, buried in debt, embroiled in wars, run by politicians with primary allegiance to corporations, not to mention the thousands of victims of sexual predations by Catholic priests...

Any good progressive knows that when Americans elect today's Republicans, it's a national exercise in self-punishment. And of course, Democrats--especially "centrist" ones--are only too glad to tell us that. This article challenges those centrists--and Andrew Schmookler's recent popular OEN piece--asserting that rather than wringing hands over electoral losses, Dems should be searching souls over HOW evil their party now is.

The criminal case against ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern for "resisting arrest" when he was denied entry to a public speech by retired Gen. David Petraeus appears to be nearly over, but the image of police brutally shielding the mighty from a citizen's question remains troubling, writes Robert Parry.

If we expect to regain the liberty bestowed upon us by the Bill of Rights, we must turn a deaf ear to Washington's lies. Washington's agenda is divorced from the agendas of the American people. Washington's agenda is war and more debt for taxpayers to service even though a majority cannot pay their bills except with mounting credit card debt, and a police state in place to control the population.

The Big Lie about the financial crisis is based on a deliberate confusion between mortgages and mortgage securities.

Predictably, Western corporate media is spinning this whole debacle is now due to FEAR OF THE DEVIL -- as in Vlad. The fears apparently rampant in Brussels and assorted European capitals (among pol clowns, for sure; NOT in the streets). The rhetoric is beyond ominous.
The mysterious death of an Argentine prosecutor has whipped up new suspicions around the case of who bombed the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in 1994 and whether there was an official cover-up, but the evidence on both counts remains dubious or discredited, says Gareth Porter.

The consciousness debates have provoked more mudslinging and fury than most in modern philosophy, perhaps because of how baffling the problem is: opposing combatants tend not merely to disagree, but to find each other's positions manifestly preposterous. It would be poetic were it ultimately to prove that the one thing the human mind is incapable of comprehending is itself. An answer must be out there somewhere. And finding it matters: indeed, one could argue that nothing else could ever matter more -- since anything at all that matters, in life, only does so as a consequence of its impact on conscious brains. Yet there's no reason to assume that our brains will be adequate vessels for the voyage towards that answer. Nor that, were we to stumble on a solution to the Hard Problem, on some distant shore where neuroscience meets philosophy, we would even recognise that we'd found it.

Information from the Planck space telescope helped create a stunning new map. It's also shedding light on dark matter and the origins of the universe. From 2009 to late 2013, the European Space Agency's Planck spacecraft revolved around our planet while using its telescope to soak up relic radiation from the Big Seed known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, or CMB. Its goal, in effect, was to look back in time to just about 370,000 years after the Big Seed. Now NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), which worked closely with the ESA on the Planck mission, has released a captivating interactive map of the Milky Way using Planck's data. It combines multiple views of our galaxy, including mapping dust, carbon monoxide gas, magnetic fields and a type of radiation known as "free-free." The cosmic microwave background light is a traveler from far away and long ago."

Fifty percent of the world has already broken free of the imperial order that has governed the planet since the end of World War II.

Marcus Borg, Maurice Friedman, and the Historical Jesus
The Christian right is up to no good. But most progressives and liberals may not appreciate just what a serious challenge the biblical scholar Marcus J. Borg (1942-2015) posed to some of the most cherished myths of the Christian right through his work on the historical Jesus. In the present tribute to Borg, I propose to connect his thought with points that Maurice Friedman (1921-2012) makes, drawing on Buber's thought.

Brian Williams is going to take a brief absence from the NBC Nightly News broadcast, he said in a press release Saturday. The move follows Williams' admission that he was not actually aboard a helicopter in Iraq that was shot down by enemy fire in 2003, as he had previously said. The network is conducting an internal investigation into Williams' reporting on his 2003 trip to Iraq, as well as his work during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

In the last 100 years, we got very confused about happiness. This is no small thing. The way we define happiness drives what we do, what we're willing to sacrifice, and how we spend our money and our time.

Single-payer advocates are celebrating the reintroduction of the so-called 'Medicare-for-All' bill that would replace the nation's byzantine healthcare system, dominated by private health insurance companies, with a single, streamlined public agency that would pay all medical claims for the entire population, much like Medicare does for seniors today.

The US Government Is Terrified of Hobbyist Drones
At least some of us saw this coming decades ago (I did, while working on Hyperblimps, as new design of airship). One friend argued that it was too slow and had too little payload to be of harm militarily, yet I have been approached by major military manufacturers here and from other countries (Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, and others I can't recall, and including a local police department). We almost got an SBIR (small business loan), until I realized the air force wanted it to target whoever was a terrorist in Afghanistan on any particular day, so they could bring the heavy artillery and blow them away. Obama's Russian Roulette
The current crisis in the Ukraine, orchestrated by the United States, only benefits the U.S. military industrial machine and U.S. oil and gas barons. Gas poor Europe, their primary potential customer, has thrown its hat in (as usual) with the United States and joined it in imposing economic sanctions against Russia, which have caused billions of dollars of damage to the Russian economy.

Federal prosecutors have demanded that the Port Authority turn over records related to the personal travel of the agency's former chairman, David Samson, as well as his relationship with Newark Liberty International Airport's largest carrier, United Airlines, a development that opens yet another line of inquiry in what has become a sprawling criminal investigation. The revelations come the same week that Christie, who is considering a presidential run, is facing his own controversy over extravagant travel and who pays for it.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes from the summit between Putin, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande who met Friday to discuss a peace plan. Will the Europeans be able to derail -- or at least delay -- the American drive for confrontation? Or has the bloodlust gone too far, as it did with Iraq?

Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Des Moines on Thursday to tout the Obama administration's policies on the economy at Drake University, the White House announced. The vice president will also participate in a roundtable at Des Moines Area Community College, where he will presumably discuss President Barack Obama's proposal to offer "free" community college to American students. If Biden, 72, were to be elected president in 2016, he would take office at age 74, making him the oldest person ever to do so. Former President Ronald Reagan, the current record holder, assumed the office at age 69.

Israeli opposition leaders are calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel his planned speech in front of the U.S. Congress. Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog said Saturday that instead of warning the world about Iran's nuclear program, the controversy around the speech had damaged Israel's crucial relationship with the United States. In the latest blow, Vice President Joe Biden announced he will miss the March 3 address because of unspecified foreign travel.

The advent of the Internet has had a profound impact on the manner in which ideas and information are exchanged in the 21st century. It has leveled the publisher's playing field, putting newspapers, magazines and bookstores out of business, and enabled any average person with access to a computer the potential to reach a broad audience on whatever subject that person may choose.

The list of congressional Democrats who intend to boycott Netanyahu's speech to Congress because of the way President Obama was treated is growing by the day. If Republicans thought they could use Netanyahu's speech to make Democrats look anti-Israel and drive Jewish voters to the GOP, it is not going to work. The Democratic boycott has nothing to do with support for Israel. The issue is how the invitation was handled and the disrespect that has been shown to the President of the United States. The Republican attempt to make this a Jewish issue is a cynical and pathetic grab for votes.

"Astronomers estimate that a majority of the Earths in the Milky Way have a billion or two years' head start on us. Why is this so sobering for our future? Because it removes what used to be a tidy explanation for a troubling mystery. If the universe is full of life-friendly planets, and if life often evolves to intelligence and space travel, the mystery is why aren't we already overrun with waves of aliens? Since ages and ages ago? One theory was that we're among the first; others haven't had time yet to evolve and spread very far. But now that explanation is shot to pieces. The fact that Earth hasn't been a constant busy alien spaceport since the Precambrian Era is an aspect of the Fermi Paradox, which asks, 'Where are they?' Clearly, something prevents the development of abundant advanced life that builds interstellar spacecraft. And we don't know what it is. Will it apply to us?"

At Munich Conference, US Hawks Press for Military Escalation Towards Russia
Addressing the conference on Saturday, Merkel declared, "I cannot imagine any situation in which improved equipment for the Ukrainian army leads to President Putin being so impressed that he believes he will lose militarily. I have to put it that bluntly." "I understand the debate but I believe that more weapons will not lead to the progress Ukraine needs," added Merkel, who has pressed for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. Graham lashed back at the chancellor, accusing her of turning her back on struggling ally Ukraine, as paraphrased by Reuters. "At the end of the day, to our European friends, this is not working," said Graham. "You can go to Moscow until you turn blue in the face. Stand up to what is clearly a lie and a danger."

Eastern Ukraine has become a testing ground for Russia's new military capabilities. When Russia last went to war, in Georgia in 2008, it looked like an easy victory. But Russia's generals were deeply concerned at how badly their forces performed in some key areas of modern warfare. Russia has spent the seven years since then rearming, re-equipping, and retraining, in order to deal with those deficiencies, and to try to close the capability gap with modern Western armies. Now the results can be seen in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have gained ground against Ukrainian government troops. Russia has the benefit of a live testing ground in eastern Ukraine, where it can try out its new weapons, systems and tactics. The results will help Russia assess how its forces would fare in a direct confrontation with Nato.
